Title: CB reception probelms - diagnostics?

some help would be appreciated please!  My CB has always worked well, and no changes to the setup have been made nor damage to twig etc sustained. My mate's set up is not so good. there are no other breakers in the area, and my SWR meter wont work!!!
On recent trips my mate can hear me strongly, but I can't hear him - I know it's all about transmission as you can recieve with any old aerial, so I guessed it was his set up at fault. He's fitted a new aerial (without SWR'ing) and tried it last weekend on a trip with others and it was good for 5+ miles in open country. But today with me it was good for 100 yards only, then I couldn't hear him??? Could it be me or him?? any ideas?

check antenna and radio ground
check SWRs at radio
check coax connections both ends
