So I picked up an '86 with a G16B engine swap a few weeks ago. About a week later I started getting symptoms of the engine being fuel starved; losing power for a few moments, then coming back and getting a backfire out the exhaust. Rinse and repeat until I stop the car, let it rest for a minute and then start her up again. Then all is fine for a while. Fuel pump has been intermittently making some straining noises so I replaced the in line pump and filter. Things seemed to improve until the other day I started noticing something strange happening. The new pump would whine loudly, then the fuel separator would fill quickly with fuel until it was completely full, then the engine would starve.
I am thinking that there's some crud in the tank that must be blocking the fuel lines from the tank to the pump, and the back pressure is filling the fuel separator?
Any advice or 2 cents would be appreciated, as well as which tank I should go with to replace as there is one for the original carb engine for 86-90 and an EFI one for later models. Technically mine is an 86 with EFI.
