Title: daily driven vehicles with hilift
Post by: explosivo on January 26, 2004, 04:09:59 PM
does anyone here have a daily driven vehicle with a hilift mounted on the outside? have you ever had a problem with one being nabbed while parked somewhere (parking lot)?

Haha mines just held on to my rear bumper by two ratchet straps at the moment (until I build some brackets)

I havent had a prob yet.  Though I live out in the boonies so I guess I don't have much to worry about.  :P

Mine is mounted in a jackguard where the spare wheel used to be. Its really not all that secure as you could cut the 'hinge' with a sharp knife and take the end cover off. I think it looks a bit of a deterent though and its easy to take it off and store it indoors when the car is parked outside the house. I will reinforce the cover at some point but like everyone else I have a very long list of jobs to be done

James - we nearly caught sight of those 33"s in the pic's!!

using the HiLift - I know you have a suitable front bumper, but how do you / anyone else use a HiLift? I've got one on order, with the bolt-on tube receivers ( from a LR Disco) which I'm going to try to fit to the chassis at the front. But how about lifting on the bullbar fixings?? or the rear tow bar frame?? ( with a LR Defender type HiLift adapter)

I'm interested to learn what you guys do. I've bought the jack as a recovery tool for short winching, as well as because my standard jack won't reach any more!

Well to be honest I've got the jack fitted to the back but I can only use it in the front at the mo. I have a couple of tubes welded on the winch bumper to take the '90' adapter but I have to pull my finger out and sort out some side bars/rock sliders. At least its not cluttering up the kitchen anymore.

We leave ours mounted on the outside on our daily driver.  But we have a pad-lock mechanism which keeps honest people honest.

I leave mine on but back into my parking spot up against a wall. At nite I lock my tracker in the garage, I don't live in the best part of town (not great, not bad)

Ya, locking a soft top, like locking your glove
box, is not very effective, not only do they break
your box or cut the top, they still steal your stuff

Here is a location not most think of for securing anything to:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2456147253&category=6468

Has anyone thought of adding a simple over the top tray and securing the hi-lift up there? Or if you don't use a back seat, get a different soft top which is only the back of the cab, then make a tray for the back passenger area.

I don't think I'd mount my jack on the hood like that.  It seems like it would beat the snot out of the hood.  It would also make the hood quite heavy and if not positioned just right, it would break the windshield when you flip the hood over.

Darn it, I knew I should've locked up the tracker that nite..I guess someone needed them more than I did..
I'm using the 48inch Hi-lift. I wanted a bigger one but couldn't find the place to put it.  The 48inch one already sticks up far enough. This is were a 4dr would come in handy..

"O" me.  Thats the Calmini bumper. It comes with a bracket to buy another bracket from them to mount your hi-lift.

Ive got mine bolted to the top of my home made bumper easy to get to even if I have the winch on my rig.(http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid102/p31db97b545a28cb4277203751b8ddb27/f9b2a581.jpg) (http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid83/p2657bf86d5143d8790345cfee7dac3d2/fae42a11.jpg)

Ha, ha, having said that today I had to break out the hi-lift to get both myself and another Vit out of some very heavy ruts on a lane in Wiltshire. On both occasions I put the Hi-Lift onto the rear tow bar to lift the vehicle up while we set to with the spades. Can't get the pics of my camera at the moment due to PC trouble
