Title: Sidekick TBI to Samurai?
Post by: zukmon on February 02, 2004, 08:31:58 PM
Can I put the TBI on my 1.3 Samurai? I think it would work (I've got intake, ECU, harness). Would it give me any power/mileage gains? How about the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold on the Sidekick? Does it work better on a 1.3 than the stock Samurai manifold and not quite as good as a nice header. I've had a Headman in the past; any newer/better models out there now?

                                                                      Thanks,

Maybe as a path to the 1.6 8-valve swap it would be worth it. I don't think you'd see any real performance gains by adding the FI to the 1.3 stock engine. But you could do the swap, it would run swell... and then save up for the 1.6 at which time you'd be a few steps ahead by having a workin FI on the car already. BTW: Trail Tough sells modified harness to make your swap plug and play.

I would do the swap, nothing like running fuel injection when climbing up a hill, I did it in my Sami and wish I had done it a lot sooner.

Any time you can drop the carb and get FI it's a good thing.  Even if there's no additional power gain.  Of course you wont know for sure until you try.

A friend of mine (jeep guy) put a 4.0 throttle body on his 4 banger and it made a difference.

Good luck.

Well I bought a Sidekick form a friend for cheap for the 1.6, power steering, and 3rd members but the block was cracked. So my 1.3 has higher comp pistons and a Hawk billet torquer cam.

Use the 1.6 head, intake, exhaust, injection wiring, etc, don't use the torquer cam, it's a waste in that application. The torquer cam i salmost exactly the same as the stock 1.6 cam. You can use the fuel pump from a 86-89 Ford Ranger with a 2.9 v6, or one from a 88-92 F-150 with a v6 (the external pump either way). That pump will also work for a 16v 1.6.

Some people over here use the Track/Kick carb on the Sammi so I don't see why you couldn't use the TBI.
