Title: Knocking
Post by: Brandon on January 30, 2004, 01:18:21 PM
My 1.6 Sidekick started to knock 'bout a month ago.Checked the oil but was at the correct mark and it does'nt smoke. Its a great running lil zuk but this is starting to worry me.It only does it when you start it and through 1st gear.Kinda sounds like its in the top end.Does anybody know what this could be? ???

h2o in the fuel might have lowered your octane rating, causing knock?

The motor might be running a bit lean, check engine light on?

Too light weight of an oil?

(grasping for straws here)

Sounds like piston slap, mine does the same thing when it's cold. In warm weather you can barely hear it but anything below 32* makes it sound like it's going to blow. From what I understand it doesn't effect your engines durability, we'll see. Do a Google search on "piston slap", lot's of newer vehicles have the same problem.

the check engine light is on , they said it was the EGR valve.Could the valve be causeing THIS MUCH noise? It knocks no matter what the temp is , just not as loud the more gears it goes through.I've emptyed the tank ...no signs of water.
