Title: Mud, Rims, and Tire pressure?
Post by: Sami88 on January 14, 2004, 03:28:40 AM
There is this road down by the river that after a little rain is just a muddy mess all the way through.  Its mostly sand too.  The last couple of times i've went down there, the next day or two my tires would start leaking.  I know there is mudd leaking in and causing it.  What can i do to help stop this?  I know bead lock rims would help, but i don't have that $.  I have a 88 samurai and have stock 205s on it.  i'm running 28 #s of pressure in it.  Should i run a different pressure?
Thanks,
88

What is going on is that the tire has a too soft of a side. The sidewall flexes enough that dirt/mud accumulate between the bead of the tire and the rim. Only way to get them clean is to break the bead, clean off the lip of the rim, and reset. If you had a buddy with a tire mounter, it all can be done without re-balancing. You just work one lip at a time. If the tire rotates, it'll be out of balance.

I'd suggest that you look to getting a stiffer sidewall tire with mud-type lugs as a tread pattern.

You need bigger tires. The sidewalls have too much torque on the beads. Bigger tires, more sidewall, less torque. We have this problem with our hammerwagons all the time.

Somebody is going to ask so....
Definition of Hammerwagon :  A couple hundred dollar tracker that runs really good. We then take it out and pound it silly untill its too bent to move. Then we pull the motor and put it into something worthy.

Thanks guys.  I can't go bigger unless you call 215s bigger :).  I guess i'll just do what i can to get the mud out afterwards.  I've still got about half the tread left on these.  A lift might call for some new ones though.  Again thanks for the input.
