Title: What does broken valve spring sound like?
Post by: bandit86 on January 10, 2004, 08:07:31 AM
I have a noise in my engine that I can't locate.  I thought it was detonation.  Changed timing, runing 94 octane, still no change.  It's barely noticable at idle and no throttle at higher RPM, like when slowing down.  but it does come on with throttle, I can make if get worse or better.

pull your valve cover and check it out! use a timing light on your valve springs and rev it up on each one you will have to move the timing light pick up around to diffrent plugwires so that it will work with the diffrent springs, watch for the spring retainer to be going all over the place when holding the rpm steady, that will be a bad spring!

what would it sound like?  Without taking it apart?

What you got is piston slap.
Valve springs don't make much noise
but usually cause a miss, not sealing
the cylinder.

that's true.  I was hoping it was something that I could have fixed without tearing my engine apart.

If it runs fine drive it, the slap is not a problem.
