Title: CB Radio Installation
Post by: TN_Tracker on December 25, 2003, 06:25:19 AM
I got a Mini Radio Shack CB for Christmas but I can't find a logical place to install it. Anybody got tips on where to locate it? :-/

One of my friends just mounted it to the glove box door.  I would put one in but they look like a giant RC car with the huge antenna hanging off the roof.   ;D  lata stu

If you have the rear center console, Take out the rear ashtry (you don't need it anyways) Mount it facing up and the speaker towards the front, run the wires through the centerconsole. Its neat, clean and out of the way and out of sight.

I had a hole in the dash under the stereo so i put it in there and mounted the antenna to the rear bumper in front ot the passenger rear tail light. I will take  some pics 2morrow and post them.

Merry Christmas :D

oh wait I forgot I cant access my web site from home to edit it, so I cant post them. Don't the pics have to be on a web page to post???? ??? If not how do you post them?
Under my stereo was a hole where I think the ashtray ussed to be, next to the cigarette lighter. I then ran the coax cable through the hole next to the shiter and along the frame with zip ties. I used part of one of the side view mirror mounts. The part where the antenna actually hooked to the mount formed a upside down L. and i just drilled holes in the bumper and mounted it. it is subject to the stuff my passenger sider rear tire throws up but i havent had a problem yet(it is mounted on the "body" side of the bumper). I have also removed the plastic from the rear so it is just the metal frame so to speak. If some one knows exactly how to post pics I took some to night that i could post. I hope this helps :)

The easiest way is to build a 6 pt roll cage and mount it on the roll cage ;D

OK seriously, my first CB was mounted in place of the dome light. The light did not work, so I used it's power wire, grounded the CB inside the hoop, and all of the antenna cables can be ran down through the hoop, into the side panels and to the back, keeping all of it hidden. Also It will put the CB close to your head where you will be able to hear it running down the interstate with the top off. If you do this location, be sure that you wont hit your head on it bouncing down the trail. :P
Later,
Merry Christmas,
Zig

Thanks for all of your ideas. I'm thinking about just above the rearview mirror if I can find a decent way to hide the wires. I also like Zig's idea of the dome light area. My '96 doesn't have a pocket/detent in the middle of the dash and my radio is the factory double DIN size so there is no pocket under it either. On the side or rear of the console is an option and so is the ashtray but my hearing ain't what it used to be so I'd like to mount it high so the speaker would be more exposed.

What about using the rear console mount as suggested and then running an external speaker up by the dome light.  Wouldn't be too hard to make a mounting pod for up there with fiberglass or something and then cover it with vinyl.

Doing it that way it would look nice, be mostly out of the way, and you'd still be able to hear it.

I'm thinking on mine I'm going to see about getting a couple pieces of aluminum plate/sheet and mount it in the cubby hole in front of the passengers above the glove box.  Obviously that won't work for you with a 96 but it's something to consider for us guys with the earlier ones without airbags in the way.  If you do it right with quick release type connectors you can take it out when you're not using it so it doesn't get stolen and then quickly plug the whole thing back in when you actually need it.

My girlfriend's step dad has a Nissan Pathfinder and he installed his CB on the driver side just under the dash where the front drivers side speaker would be in our Sidekicks and Trackers.  It's not very practical for us since that's where our tunes come out from, but I bet somewhere around there would be good, even for a small CB (like my GF's step dad has.)

OK.. here's a shot of my radios. (They are kinda fuzzy...and my truck is kinda dirty... lol) Sorry it took a while... holiday season! :)

I have a Uniden Beartracker 7 Scanner under the steering wheel on the driver's side attached with one already there under dash screw, and then screwed in with another screw (I think it was a self tapper? lol) to make it two. The scanner is about the size of a small radio like a cobra or radiosmack), so this might be a good comparison:

I also have a Uniden PC78 Mounted in the same fashion on the passenger side under the dash. This one just used two of the original dash screws that were already there. Easy install.

Here's a shot of all three. The Icom 2720 (Amateur) has a removeable face that we attached to the front of the ashtray.

Hope maybe this helps....?

I only use my CB when I'm wheeling, it sits on top of the dashboard on Velcro pads. The power lead has a cigarette lighter plug on it (fused). That way I can remove it when its not in use.

Because of room I got a Cobra with all the stuff set into the hand set.  It attaches to a little box I mounted in the dash.

I was worryed about how well it would work but was supprised at how well it does work.

It actually works better that some of my friends larger more expensive models.  I do have a high grade attenna and is tuned proporly.

I used the Velcro on the dash, and found the radio
comes loose from the rough ride, so I have been
thinking about mounting it in the dash, left of the
steering collum, where I have a bunch of blank
switch knockouts, small Cobra might just fit there.

Here's how I did it:

Made a bracket to hold the Antenna.

Mounted the CB using one existing screw and only drilled 1 other hole.

Mounted the Mic Clip using an existing screw.

It works great. Thanks for the advice.

This may sound bad, but I havent really paid that much attention. :-[ I have thought of getting the Clamini rear tire holder/bumper. Have you or anyone had a problem before? I guess I should check, but I dont think it has beat it up too much if it has. Thanks for brining it up though, I will have to check it out.

Radioschmack 102' on the back or I'll sometimes switch it to the Wilson fiberglass on the front fender which is hooked up to the scanner normally... if I get tired of the 102.

Jacob,
I have been running with a 33x12.50 hanging on my stock mount for years without trouble. Just remove the tire occasionally and make sure it is not denting or cracking around the mount.

On my original Tracker I had the radio mounted under the dash at my knees...bad spot.  I banged my shins more then once while wheelin (I am a rather large fellow!).  On my latest 'Kick I removed the rear view mirror and put it there.  I like this setup much better.  I have no trim panels on my truck (base model), so I put the power and antenna in split loom and ran it down the passenger side pillar.  It's not (too) noticable.   :-/
Can get pics if you want...

Since I considered doing the same thing I'd really like to see the pics. Mine is mounted high enough now that it has not created a problem but overhead seems to be the most logical place to install it. The CB I have is small enough that the mirror would not have to be removed.

OK, finally got a couple of pictures.  Yes, that's frost on the inside of the roof and the cb, -45C here this morning.  Sorry for the pic quality but it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.  No time to take them while I'm at work (like now) so I can't get it done in day light.

As you can see from the drivers view (camera sitting at my eye level) it doesn't really get in the way of the view of the road or things off to the right of the truck.

Thanks Terry, it looks great. I'm considering moving mine up there when I find a suitable way to hide the wiring.

UberAsuna, I think this is the best place for ease of installation. No problem grounding the bracket like it would be on the tailgate and on my '96 automatic there is a grommet just above the gas pedal that makes it easy to get the antenna wire inside. Proper grounding is important if you want a correct SWR. On channel 1 my SWR barely moves the needle and on channel 19 it's about 1.5 so I'm happy. I have changed the antenna since I took this picture and now have a 48" Firestik, works much better.

OK, I was allowed to leave early today and get out into some daylight, I'm not nocturnal after all.
Here's 2 more in daylight, but I think it was too dark for the pillar pic to show up, looks like there was no flash...

Guess I can bring that stick of AfterBite in off the visor, not much chance of bug bites in this weather.

And yes, the big V on the windshield is due to the cold, -41 and the heater just can't cut it down here.  Temp should let up later this week, or I guess I could put the hard top on.....pffft, too much work.
