Title: locker for front?
Post by: brace on January 08, 2004, 06:34:17 AM
Is it dangerous to have a locker for the front end?  I am definitely getting one for the rear, but I have been told for a daily driver, it is not a good idea.  What do y'all think?

Do you have manual locking hubs?  If you do its not a problem.  You only lock you hub in when off roading.  And the rest of the time it just sits idle when going down the road.

I myself, went with ARB's front and rear.  I like being able to have open diffes when on the street and locked solid when needed.

Don't all zuks come with some kind of disangagement for the front?  Manual or auto?

I was mainly talking about when it snows and I need to put it in 4H instead of 2H.

Lockers in the front end and fast snow travel do not mix well.  One tirer will always be skiding on the snow.

Even in the mud I sometimes have a hard time turning with both lockers locked.

Adding a locker is like going from 2wd to 4wd.  It's a huge difference.  I met a group that all run ARB's and they will leave them off a lot of times just to make the wheeling harder because with them locked most obsticals are no problem.

So you just have to ask the big question.  How much an I going to use it off road compaired to 4 wheel Hi snow driving.  Unless your willing to go the extra $ for the ARB's.  I felt they were well worth it.

I dont use 4wd on the street any more. With a locker in the rear and some good tires you dont really need it anyway.  :-/

Using 4wd on the road in the snow is no fun!!! How are you to get the rear end to slide when the front is diging in?

The stearing wheel is almost optional when theres snow on the ground.

Snow + Corners = FUN!!

My wife and kids are us to it.  I sometimes forget when I have some one new in the truck and kinda freak them out sometimes.  ;D

You'd get "torque steer".  That one tire could grab and pull you in that direction.

I like the rear spinning out as much as the next guy, but not when I am bouncing off town square curb with new grocery getters all around me.
Speaking of spinning out, I was just out wheeling in my work truck (in deep snow) yesterday and slide for at least 40 ft like the Dukes of Hazard being chased by cops and its a hard top hummer.
