Title: Front differential leak.
Post by: RalphARoni on November 04, 2019, 02:30:43 PM
Hi
I was under the Tracker today preparing for another project and found oil dripping from the front dif. While working on it it looks like it was resealed with silicone which kind of drooled out here and there and is leaking.   Is it a big project to change that gasket (or just reseal it with fresh Gasket Goo)?  Is there maintenance that the dif should have while I'm in there?
Thanks.

Did a little more research and it looks like I might have to pull it out to stop the leak. Poss the previous owner just cracked it apart enough to squirt in some liquid gasket. I might have to try it again. Anybody ever try that?

RTV sealant is used from the factory, and if you try to remove the third member you're going to discover that it is virtually impossible to "crack it apart enough to squirt in liquid gasket" - they "bond" to the housing and it takes quite a bit of effort to separate them - be aware you need to pull the right side axle and the intermediate shaft on the left side before you can remove the third.

Thanks. Probably easier than it looks. I'll give it a try when I can.
