Title: New paint opinions.
Post by: Mikerpm4x4 on October 30, 2003, 08:35:13 AM
Ive been really thinking about painting my rig a new color. So many cool photos are wasted because you cant see whats going on. Too much black. :'( :'( :'( :'( This really saddens me because I really like black.

Ive thought about staying kinda mild by just adding some silver/blue scallops, flames, ect. Mabey chrome rims? This would blend well with the Calmini blue suspension and the silver Tracker emblems.

OR

Go nutz and paint the inside and out orange with red accents. My first choice would have been yellow but a close freind of mine is building a sweet Yellow tracker right now. I dont want to copy or even be close. Down side is I drive it daily and I doubt there is any sliding by the cops in a rig of that color.

One more thing I want to keep in mind is simplicity. If I cave a fender in I dont want to have to try and match some crazy paint scheme.

Any thoughts?

Mike

Personally... I would say either blue or green. That orange color is going on too many rigs these days... just my opinion...

I would say metalic blue for nice looks, but i'd also like to see a camo paint scheme. Black is also nice, and your pics look fine.

Just stay away from the 'I'm high on Krylon'-type paint job.

dam that look bad.  I think the urben(black & white) camo would look pretty sick.  I'm the only one with a Tracker around here so i can paint mine anything.  i'm thinkin about yellow because neon green would be a lil much for the Tracker. lol  lata Stu

That's one ugly sammy!!!! I'd go with an electric blue for a change of pace.  Just don't go Purple, 'cause that's the color my Sammy will be turning next spring  ;D

Heather, you do have a point with the orange.

I like the urban camo but Ive seen it quite frequently in magazines lately. Besides I just think of it more as a sami color. That might be because Brent from trail tough has his sami that color. :-/ Another thing I was kinda shooting for is not being mistaken for another black tracker at an event. There are now 6 or 7 nice black ones that I know of running around. We have 5 in our club alone! I think that some scallops or some other addition to the original paint would do the trick.

Now Im kinda diggin the Urban Camo Idea. :-/ Not to Gaudy but different.

Keep the Ideas comming ;)

Thanks to those of you that have already replied.

I went with 32 Coats of Polly-U. just in case I scratch the paint i could buff it out. The color Mercedes Black.
And I am still in the process of powder coating the underbelly Calmini Blue.

Mine is also black and I was thinking of a white to red fade flame job  ( grill to the doors)just to add color to an all black rig. Black is a good base coat, a whole body color change is a lot of work. What about some white or yellow graphics, can anyone say bumblebee or more like a yellowjacket but thats my thoughts for the day.

Ok here's a diffrent one, one of my favorites for some unknown reason is a turqoise light green that you see mostly on mid to late 60's Chevy and GMC trucks.  It's non metalic, which means you could probably patch it up pretty easy.  Hope someone out there knows the color. Oh well, just a thought ;D   Dave

OK mike I have the solution to all of your problems, Paint it Orange, move to Tennessee and any cop that spots you will think your a UT fan and never give you a second look ;D

Really I got an idea, you want to stay black but you also like orange ??? Keep the Black and highlight with Orange. You can keep the majority Black (easy to fix when dented) and put orange Rally Sport racing stripes down the top. Then hit the roll bar, rock sliders etc.. with orange also. "Hagen's Rally Sport Tracker" has a cool sound to it ;) ;D :o 8) 8) 8)

Hey Mike,

If nothing less, maybe I can get you to laff.

1st Suggestion - Go white, to 180* from where you are now.  You can always see white at night.  Good guys always wear white (lull them into a false sense of security). ;)

2nd Suggestion - Add orange tiger strips .  Then everytime you hop and bounce of the rocks, you can start singing, "The wonderful things about Tiggers, are Tiggers are a wonderful things..."  You know the rest.  :P If nothing else, Eric and reach inside your cab, grab your elongated folicle extrustions, and exclaim, "Hey, I caught a tiger by the tail!" ::)

3rd Suggestion - Invest in more cans of black rattle.  Can't get more simple than that.  Screw photos, they never do the hard obsticles justice anyway.  Besides, you'll paint and make it look all foo-foo only to slide it down a boulder on Lower Hell and wonder why you ever wasted the time and money (see YT tag foto). ;D

Junk food for thought.

IMO either get mid dark forest green or midnight blue or a little lighter blue ... best colrs ever ...  CAMO is cool but its not unique anymore ...

How about a different type of camo like Dupont Imron paint that changes hues depending on the way you look at from different angles. ::)

There is this brand new Jeep on post (FT.Story) that the owner had painted with rhino liner (The whole body). I don't know if the dealer did it.  It looks bad a$$! I'll try to post a pic of it if he'll let me photograph it.

ZEBRA STRIPES! You're half-way there! ;) Zebra stripes are way cooler than any other camo variant.

I have a white traker.
It had some paint peeling from poorly done repair .
Being on the coast I Know It must be coverd or rust WILL take over!
I am plenty picky about body and paint work and Old/wise enough to chose my battles ....This is after all a 4X4 and I Will use it off road, so a super nice paint job would just make me nuts! I decided I need to do something practical yet unique
I have some Viny grachic film cut in various odd shapes and applied to the bad spots and all over the rest of the rig  now it looks like a gatway computer box ... Hence the name Cowtracker.
I know it's difrent, but what the heck It's fun :) I get lots of looks and coments, One guy from work even gave me a Moo Horn to put on it.
The best part is it cost me about $100 and I paid to have it done.
if I ever mess it up it will be cheap and easy to fix.
FWIW
You could go the other way and apply white to black.

does it have to be a different color?  Maybe it just needs a splash of color to jazz it up.
maybe something like this....

Mt favorite of all my suzukis, my 1994 Tracker, not a true Zuke, but good enough.  it was a sharp ride till some girls stopped in the fast lane of the freeway with a flat tire and i spun out of control trying to avoid hitting them and hit a wall at 75 mph.  i was lucky to be alive, my poor kick however.....different story.  feel free to use the design if you like. it's neon green to electric blue to fushia.

Yes he does, The first time I spotted him on the trail he blew by me on some sandy wash boards at about 40 (I was doing about 15-20 through them and thought it was fast :P) He later told me that if you hit them over 35 they smooth out :-/

Well I talked to my body guy and he said he will be ready for it in about 2 weeks. Just in case your not familiar with body guys that means 3 weeks in "real time" ;) He wants to go orange. :-/ I think Im gonna go for it.

Next question. Has anyone cut and moved the floorboards back in a clean manor? Or would a big hammer be a better Idea? :P

Mike

We used a grinder, a cutting disk, a torch, 3 different hammers, and a welder to get the job done.  I wouldn't call it 'clean' during the process, but it ended up being clean lookin in the end.  We painted, dynomatted, and undercoated it to look and perform better then stock.

Some picutures of the process can be found here http://www.whitepineclub.com/members/kd7hcg/pictures/33s/index.html

Good luck!

Mike,
I cut and replaced my passenger side floorboard. I had never bent sheetmetal to fit before and made it look good. I double layred it to make it stronger. Then when I got to the drivers side I decided to see if all of that work made a big difference, and used a BFH and a 2x6. It came out looking smooth (except for the folds at the bottom) and I was pissed that I had spent all of that time on the other side. But now a few years later, the passenger side is still in good shape and the drivers side is rusting through and I need to replace it any way. I'll try to find a pic and e-mail it to you.

Well I picked out the color today. We looked at all the oranges and I picked out the brightest one I could find. It gets dropped off Dec 15th.  Im going to pound back the floorboards Sat night.  Ive got new fenders and will probabaly trim the Sat night as well.

Chunk stopped by last night to BS. I was cleaning out all the dust in my Speedometer, thought it might work again if I did that.... It didnt. It has 99989 on it. Damn thing wont give me the pleasure of rolling 100000.  >:(

He was walking around my rig while it was on the hoist. Each sentence began with "Did you know..."

Did you know your frame is bent
Did you know your floorboards are caved in
Did you know Your Exhaust is bent to crap and has a big hole

Blah Blah Blah
This goes on for a minute (or 2) and then he says "Screw the paint, you oughta junk this piece of crap! :o

I told him Bent does not = Broke.  ;) Then I told him to stop being such a wus!

Ive got a lot to straighten and fix... Ohh well.  Hopefully it will feel like new in a few weeks.

Mike

Mine has a candy cane look to it.  Its kinda funny.  Front fender is white... then door is red.... 2nd door white... back red.   Gotten a lot of curious eyes.  But cops recognize me no matter what when neighbors explain what i look like when i rev up the engine at 12 at night.  I was changing the fuel filter!

I was thinking of kinda a cool blue.. i was looking at the blue like steel blue.  Kinda pondering whether to worry about clearcoat.  I'm just going to scratch it some more in the woods anyway.  Who knows it all depends on price.

I was thinking about going with a flat finish on mine.  Good old Army Helicopter Green.  It's almost a black green.  Little different than a flat black but you wouldn't likely see anyone else with a rig that color either.

It's FS 34031 if you know how the federal standard colors work and want to take a look at it.

Hi, new member here. I just got done painting one of my Zuks! It used to be dark blue/primer gray/rust brown. I wanted a color that would turn heads, so I chose safety red. A buddy and I stripped and gutted it before painting. I'm in the process of reassembling it now. Safety red paint is so bright, it fools my camera into thinking it's orange. Only a few of the pics I've taken actually show it's true color. Here's one:

I love it! Can't wait to put it back together. Everything on the truck will be either red or black, except the chrome lug nuts. Whaddaya think?

All this talk of painting as made me want to add color to my rig, which is all black. Anyone thought of maybe an old fashion flame job? Mine goes in Friday. I always wanted a good old fashion flame job on something and I plan on keeping my Zuki for a looooong time. Gotta love these little Zukis.

I went to one of those over priced chain auto stores and bought  2 huge rolls of stick on flames and had my brother-in-law put them on.(hes a professional detailer)  it dosen't look as cheap as you might think.  It goes good with the hood scoop.   lata stu

If this is the longest thread. then pictures of the SAS comes in a strong 2nd.
I thought about the sticker flames, not a bad Idea if you change your mind you can always peel them off.
So much to do, so little $$

Just dropped my rig off last night. Thanks for all the tips on moving the floors back. It went very smooth. I removed the coils and put the tires back on to get the full up travel effect. I used a BFH to "massage" the inner fenders back. I ended up having to cut a chunk of steel out from behind the headlights too. I bought some new fenders from Certifit for $24 and proceded to cut them up. ;D I think they turned out pretty well. I cut the opening close and then rolled the lip over for some integrity. It looks like they are stock ;D I think the plastic inner fenders will be able to be reinstalled.

On another note. After taking the winch, bumpers, skids, cage, Rear tire, seats, subs, interior, ect out the suspension is fully topped out. Just goes to show how weight sensitive these things are.
