What year did the Kick 2 doors start running the larger 26(?) spline axle shafts in the rear? I'm looking at getting another parts ride and wanted to make sure it had replacements for my 97 rear axle.
Will the new bodystyle Trackers, Vitaras and GV axle shafts work in a 97 axle?
Thanks,
Zig

Hell, not all GV axles are interhangeable amongst themselves. And no, they won't fit the Kick.
To my knowledge, Kicks always has 26 spline in the rear. They upped to 26 spline in the front in 1996.

Ya i think Yankee Tim is right.

Thanks, I was thinking of the front, but am brain dead after many weeks of 70+ hours of work :P But I am quickly building the mods for Moab fund ;D

Speaking of rear axles. ÂÂ
How many of you folks have swapped out your stock axles to the ones that don't require the brake drum "adapter" between the tire and the axle?
More info on when 'kicks' stopped using the drum as an adapter would be nice to know.

I'm not sure about the 'adaptor', but the newer (95-98 I think) Kicks have the brakes designed so you can pull the rear axles without disesembleing the drum brakes.
Jack vehicle, remove tire, remove drum, remove 4 axle retaining nuts, slide hammer the axle out.
My 89 was the old style, so I replaced it with the rear axle out of my 97 when I did the rotation and gears.

Our 95 sidekick has the 4 axle bolts, which bolt onto the brake drum. The drum then attachs to the tire via its lug bolts.
During last years memorial day run, Eric B was running an axle setup where the axle had the lug studs and the drum slipped over the lug studs and the tire directly attached to the axle, not via the drumb. (make sense?)
(Those 4 axle nuts are a krappy design I'd like to get rid of)

ya zig my 93' rear is the same way. and natebert you just want to set in up like a chevy, ford, toyata and so on. where the tire/rim bolts to the axle shaft. not the tire/rim bolts to the drum then the drum bolts to the axle shaft. lata stu

My 96 Tracker is set up that way. Just like most rear drum brakes. Axil has the studs in it.
-
on my 93' the wheel bolts to the drum and the drum bolts to the axle shaft. i that was how they all are. lata stu

So is the general consensus that from 96 on, they got away from the drum-adapter design?

Was it done with the whole beefing up the drive train?
16V, 26 front splins, and different rear axils??
I have a friend with a 95 with a 16V but I'm not sure about the rear axils.
-
Those 4 center nuts that hold the drum on
look crappy without the hub cap too.
-
Question about rear ends, i'm going to buy a locker for my 95 and why do they list a locker with side gears and one without? Are the gears needed?
-
I ALSO WONDERED WHAT THAT WAS FOR...SO THE ANSWER WILL SATISFY ATLEAST 2 OF US ;D
-
I opted not to get the side gears and use my stock ones (I was still in College and BROKE). I think I remember them saying that the locker will not operate properly if the sidegears are worn.
