Title: need to waterproof my ride.
Post by: bandit86 on December 30, 2003, 01:05:44 PM
last weekend I was kept from going to some good spots because I was afraid of sucking up water,(water just above bumper) getting my wires soaked (that happened anyways) my clutch got soaked, almost needed a pull from the jeep guys, etc.
HOw do I waterproof the ignition so I can drive underwater?  ANything for the clutch? I'm making a homemade snorkle out of abs pipe, thinking pvc might be easier to work with

ok here goes.  i can go into water that goes over the hood and in the windows because of a few things i did that only cost me a few bucks.  first i had to make a snorkle.  some day i will take pics of it because it is super cheap and super effective.  i stays under the fender and goes into the side of the fire wall.  its made of the stock ram air thingy cut up and did about a 150 deg. rotation.  it took me about 2 hours to build and works so good i can't belive it.  next all i have around the coil and distrbutor(spell check) is plastic bags and duck tape to sleal them up.  i also tryed to seal all the little holes in the floor with silicone(spell check) from the under side of the body.  like i said, i can go deeper then the guys with the 38 and have a lot more fun doin it.  lata stu

I have not done any water proofing but relocating my vent hoses for the diffs, and tranny. I have also been into water up to the door handles, driving slow and steady, and did not suck water with a stock air set up. That was crossing Big South Fork River about 75 yards wide. Diving in and out of mud holes I have had lines as far as 1.5' up the front of the hood but once I got in the hole it was only half way up the door :o

I do want to get and ARB air snorkel and do some water proofing, but I dont get into deep water alot.

I don't like super deep water myself, but you have to be prepared!

Here in Michigan there's lots of water/mud.  I've known too many people that have hydroed their motors in unknown water holes or find a rut that they didn't know about and go swimming.

ARB snorkle ftp://http://www.rocky-road.com/kicksnork.html.  Mine was like $135 a couple years ago.  Cheep insurance.

Zukipilot, I think you have been very lucky. There is a water trap in the intake but it doesn't afford that much protection. I know from experience, I hydro locked my engine when it was only 6 months old. The water only came up just above the bumper but it bent two rods and got me a repair bill equivalent to around $2000. I had been contemplating fitting a snorkel but they looked quite expensive, the ARB snorkel was around $300. In the end I had to pay out for the Snorkel and the repair bill.

I have done that crossing a few times with it that deep. On my 89 the duct is in the fender and it must almost completely fill up before it will suck water. So I drive VERY slow through stuff like that, usualy following a larger ride watching the depth. But your right, I'm pushing my luck, a snorkel is in my list of future mods.
