I have noticed a lot of discussions for what gears are good with 35" tires, but we are only going to run 31" tires so what is a good combo of gears and 31" tires????
We are doing the 1.6 engine swap so will that be enough power to use stock gears and 31"s???
TIA for the help

is it for a sammy or a track/kick
if it is for a sammy 4.1:1 transfercase gears are what I was told.
Unless you want to do R & P and then I'm still looking for that answer.

It's for a Sami!!

top calculator takes old and new tire diameter and current gear ration and will compute the new gear ratio.

I don't know what the gear ratio is on the Samurai. Need some help with that one.

what is the stock tire diameter on the kick?
-
the samurai has 3.73 stock gears in the Ring and Pinion.
stock tire size on samurai is 205/70/15 or 205/75/15 I believe.
I used 26 inches for stock size
30 = 4.3038
31 = 4.4473
32 = 4.590769230769231 or 4.6
33 = 4.734230769230769
34 = 4.877692307692308
35 = 5.0211538461538465
36 = 5.164615384615384
37 = 5.308076923076923

Note that you can do the same for your tcase ...
using old tires as 26" and "current gear ratio" of 1 (tcase high range)...
30 = 1.1538
31 = 1.1923
32 = 1.2307
33 = 1.2692
So, a 20% high range reduction on the tcase and 31's will turn the same RPM on the tach as stock.

actually syock t-case i range in a sami reduces 1.49:1
so u need to figure calculations from there.

I ran 31"LTB's with stock gearing( WITH the older tall 5th tranny) And I STILL used 5th but wind resistance would make me shift back to 4th after a while.
I could use 5th all the time with the newer lower 5th gear tranny. My 1.6 Is pretty wicked though. ;D
The only thing I can say about gearing is that once I put 5:14 gears in 31's were too small 33's are just about perfect now.

I ran a 4.1 T-Case with my 31's and it was pretty good on the road (I have a 88.5 with the newer tranny also), then when I put my 4.62 diffs in, I had too much gear and too little tire. I seem to be right on with my 33's I have on there now.

whoops my bad ... (kick is 1.00 in hi tho :) )
