Title: Price of gasket kit?
Post by: PWSX3 on May 11, 2005, 12:30:39 PM
We took our Tracker motor out this weekend and found there is water in the oil, or the oil was a "tan" color so we are asuming that is what it is.
What does a gasket kit cost for a 93 1.6 Tracker engine? I called our local parts stores and no one has one and I got prices from $95.00 to $150.00 so I don't think they know what they are talking about.

I think it's a head gasket so should we go thru the motor while we have it out? The odometer shows 39,000 miles but that could be 139,000 since there isn't another digit spot.
My local shop said it would cost around $500.00 to re-gasket the motor, which I thought was pretty high.

Hey,

All you need is a new head gasket 40.00 range or head set which includes everything you need to rebuild your head which is a good idea BTW... some gasket kits or engine kits sell for over 1000.00 they include things like pistons, oil pump.. sooooo.....

Point being there is quite a price range and you need to know what you need.....

if your head gasket blew just because it is old and tired you probably need to overhaul the complete motor rings and bearings valve stem seals dont last forever...

If you do nothing else clean both surfaces spotless and chase and clean and dry the threads on both the holes and the head bolts if they are TTY bolts replace them some 1.6 and 1.0 gblocks used TTY I believe..

what's the compression test show?

If it we're me, I'd rebuild it now while it's out. Sounds lika a re-ring and some basic head work and it'll go another 10 years.
