Does the k&n filter add all that much horsepower? and wouldn't they be more suseptable to dirt and mud than a stock filter?

It probably does give some power, as it takes hp to try to suck air through a paper filter.

Yes it does. And if you use the stock style replacement that goes in the air box it should be just as protected as the OEM filter.

If you take out the whole old airbox like I did, it does get dirty fast, but you can clean it. One way to protect it is there is a company called Outerwears that make Gortex sleeve for the K&N. I am think of just buying some Gortex fabric and making one my self. Does anyone know where you can buy a sheet of Gortex? I will post pics of it when i am done.

If they dont have the filter you need they can custom make you one they.

Or you can just roll a panty hose  ::) over the cone style filters and that does a good job and will not resrtict your flow.
