From the article, "We are still very much a multiuse agency, and that hasn't changed," Heslin said. "They (motorists) will have just as much access as they had, but it won't be five different trails up the same ridge."
By definition this is less access!
Sigh....
Oregon BLM is doing similar stuff as well. The concept of switch from 'open unless posted' to 'closed unless posted' is HUGE! Probably the largest shift possible that really puts us at a disadvantage.
It's funny that they reference Nevada BLM in the article. When we were down there it was noted that the land seemed less restrictive and private land owners that have 'gate' land (for instance own the property at the base of a canyon but the whole upper canyon is public land, most places seem to allow the owner of the 'gate' land to close off the access to the whole public land) were all opened up. I mean you couldn't get off of the right of way in the private area, which is fine by me, but the right of way was at least open so we could get to our public lands...
Try to get active at your local BLM offices!

I got arrested once from one such "gate" owner
even tho there were no gates and the signs said
"areas beyond this point may be private property"
It didn't stick and was dissmissed, but still, I get
POed at the #$%|removethispart|@ that think they own the whole
$%#^|removethispart|@ forrest simply because they own the 2 acre
mouth of the canyon >:(

The arrogant Sons Of Benedicts that run the BLM office in Las Cruces have been closing off roads in southern New Mexico for the past several years. A lot of the roads being closed have been in use since before I started four wheeling in 1959. The local 4WD club tried to bring suit to force them to re-open the roads in the Robledo mountains but lost the case.
We haven't been able to do anything about it legally, but the signs seem to get run over pretty often or, quite often, the sign disappears, leaving only the metal t-post standing there by its lonesome. In some cases they have closed roads by putting boulders in places where it ins difficult or impossible to get around them.
I've heard rumors that the signs are useful for patching holes in various things. I've also heard they make neat trophies for den walls.
In some parts of the desert the signs do not actually say that the area is closed, but rather that the area is a "Wilderness Study Area" and "certain activities may be restricted". A lot of people, apparently don't read the signs very carefully, assume the area is closed and stay out.
It looks to me as if the BLM here lacks sufficient personnel to
enforce most of the closures anyhow.

2 words "skid plates" ;D
j/k ... I chaff at seeing shutdowns, but I'm not suggesting that signs should be stolen (or driven around)

Well, I think it'd suck to have a federal trespassing ticket.
I just wish that somebody in govt. would understand that us registered automobile owners pay additional taxes in our registration which are supposed to go towards keeping roads open, not towards closing them.
And how is it that atv'ers and snowmobilers and motorcyclers get special treatment by having areas opened up exclusively to them but not legal, licensed, registered automobiles.
