Title: Need some help with rearend problems
Post by: r0ckstarr79 on November 17, 2003, 01:41:32 AM
I was leaving work yesterday in my 87 samurai. And I start hearing this ticking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the back of the samurai. Within a mile or 2, the noise got really loud and somewhat highpitched. Click! Click! Click! repeatedly over and over again. I noticed it only made the noise when I would give it some throttle. I slowed down to check it out, and the slower I got, the louder the noise got. When I had slowed to about 25-30mph it turned into a vibrating popping noise. POP POP POP! By the time I had slowed down to about 10-15mph everytime it would POP, the whole samurai would jerk really hard. I made a complete stop and climbed under my samurai. Driveshafts are all in place, nothing appears to be broken. I get back in it, stick it in gear and slowly move forward. It went about 4inches then BAM!! It felt like the rear-end was trying to lock up. Every 4-6 inches BAM!! I thought it was going to jerk the dash out. I had a friend come and I told him get in and just ease it forward. He did so, and when it "locked up" the rear end itself just twisted the leaf springs a little and looked like it was trying to roll forward then BAM!! it broke free, made it another few inches and did the same thing... Now my question is, does anybody know exactly whats wrong? And, can it be fixed, or do I have to replace the whole rear end. And, does anyone have the parts to fix it. I have the money... If I have to replace the whole rear-end, im going to go find some toyota axles to put in it.. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated seeing as how i am out of a car at the moment.
                   Thanks so much
                              Brian

I'd look at your universal joints first.  Make sure they aren't toast before you dig into the rear. I'd also try disconnecting the driveshaft at the rear and rolling the truck forward by hand to try and isolate the problem.

It's possible you broke the ring or pinion gears, or maybe the spider gears.  Are you locked in the rear??  If so, it could be the locker has a problem.

Definately determine that it is not the U joints first, but that sounds just like what happned when I broke 2 teeth off of my ring gear in the tracker. Luckily the chunks fell to the bottom and I was able to drive it home without further damage, but I did have to but a ring and pinion.

Im positive its not the U-joints. We checked them all out. Im almost 100% sure the problem lies within the rear-end.. The rear-end is completely stock and original as I know it. How hard is it to change out the ring and pinion gears, and is there a step by step I could read to do so? Ive never opened up a rear-end before. (never had any probs with them until now). Does anyone know about how much a Ring and Pinion gear costs?

Pull the third member. Possible broken spiders or even a few backed out ring gear bolts. :(

How much trouble would it be to swap in a 10bolt GM rear end out of a 4WD S10 Blazer? Has anyone ever done that, and would it be worth it? I would think it would be stronger because some of them had a 4.3 V6, but then again, I dunno......

Can you buy ring and pinion sets seperately, or do you have to buy the whole rear-end. I just called a couple junk-yards and they want 350.00 for a factory suzuki samurai rear-end.......   :'(

thats crazy,  if you have the skills and a welder and other parts why not just drop a Tracker rear in it.  the ring and pinion will be diffent.  lata Stu

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the tracker rear end? Are they stronger? I need something thats going to be able to handle around 280lbs of torque.

Im in the process of building another 229 to drop in it.  With what were doing to it, 280lbs is a guestimate. We dont know for sure, it could be less, could be more.....

Ya, thats what im going to do. I met up with another guy from here that happen to have one for sale. So, im going to buy it from him and install it.
What are the basics of replacing the 3rd member? Ive never opened up a rear-end before, but I pretty much know how it works... I know once the cover is off, there is a clip on each axle that you have to take out, then you can slide the axles away and the 3rd member is just sitting in place... Am I correct?
Also, what else would anybody reccomend I could do to it to help it last longer? Any tips or tricks? Gear oil suggestions?

Just a little off, but that's... OK :) The Suzuki rear end has a removable 3rd member like a ford 9 inch or toyota. There are no c-clips. To get it apart do this: jack rearend up off ground and support, remove wheels, disconnect brake line from backing plate, remove the 4 nuts on the bearing retainer, pull axle, repeat for other side, drain oil, pull driveline, remove the nuts that hold third member into housing, remove housing, have your way with the 3rd member :) reinstall when finished.

Good Luck, Eric

Thanks! I knew I was kinda close. What gear oil , brand and weight should I put in it when finished? And, how do I know how much to add?

I personally don't do the "oil game" All the gear boxes and rearends on the Samurai take 90wt gear oil. So, I go to the store, purchase enough to fill what ever case I'm working on, sometimes I get 75-90 synthetic when I'm feeling saucy, and fill it. No royal-ams-mob-snake oils for me. ...AND here's why; I don't have the same oil in the cases long enough to make a difference, all gear boxes are changed at 9k miles maximum. With that frequency, I feel that any oil is up to the task. I'm sure there are different opinions! :)

Im probably going to make an ass out of myself for this one, but I didnt know you were supposed to change the oil in the rear-ends periodically.... Maybe thats why mine went out......

MOST people NEVERchange gear oil in
the Diffs, let alone the Trans or T-case. As Zuke lovers
we tend to take better care of our vehicles, tho 9K miles
is more frequent than most people would do, if you think
about the offroad conditions, water crossings, mud, and
dust in general, this is a good idea.

I would say once a year should be enough, but oil is fairly
cheap insurance, kind of like the guy who just spent $1000
rebuilding a nice trick engine, and doesn't want to dump
the oil after 50-100 miles, even tho it only cost $5  ???

The fill amount is to the plug in the rear of the diff, take it
out, fill until it starts to come out, done.

I put Slick50 in the diffs when they were new, and when I did
the rear locker I switched to Synthetic oil in the rear.

I hear racers like to run 30 Weight for less friction, tho they
get new gears every race too. Would work in a pinch, better
that nothing, but not for long term use.

HAHA... No.  The original motor that was in it, was a lemon. It eventually quit working and I got tired of working on it. So I pulled it out and dropped in a Chevy.
