Title: Gears?
Post by: van7559 on November 08, 2003, 05:21:52 PM
I have a 95' kick with what I think has 5:12 gears. It is an standard trans and i just installed a 3in body lift and am not quite sure wether or not i can clear 31's without trimming, and should i go to 5:89 gearing. I don't drive it that far daily. ???

I don't think it will be that big of a problem to run stock gears.

You might get a little over revving, and you wont need to use your 5th gear all too often, but it wont be as bad as the stories you hear from guys running 33's.

The best thing to do is keep your stock gears and drive around a bit with your new tires.  If you aren't happy with the performance or your worried your revving too high, then go buy a set of 5:83s.

I have the same setup on my 94 4door. Just a 3" body lift and 31" BFG M/T's, I don't know if you noticed this but with stock gears and tires I found my car would be at 4,500 rpm or more at 70mph but with the 31s the car runs at about 3,500 rpm in 5th. My car is a little sluggish but it isn't that much slower with the stock gears, I think that 5.12's are perfect for 31" tires.  However to fit the tires I did have to trim about 2" off the fenders:

After:(http://romshack.us/up/images/fenderafter.jpg)

I had to remove even more fender then what is shown in the 2nd pic, I hope this helps.

I'm running 5.12s and 34's but that is too horrable on the street.  I might put 100 street miles on it a year.  lata Stu

i have 33s, once I got used to driving it, it's no biggie.  THe only time it's underpowered is if I'm up to the frame in mud.  Then it's got a hard time getting going.

I totally know what you mean.  Plus there is the two black rods going back and fourth across the windshiel as soon as you turn the car on and only stop when you turn the car off.  total distraction.  Same with those black fuzzy dice hanging on the mirror- too many distractions.
