Hey guy's . New guy here. I been looking to buy one of these for some time now to run up in the hills and for work and back. I'm full of questions but the one in the way right now is -- Which one ?? - I have a chance at a SJ410. Needs an engine and not sure what else. I was really looking for a Samurai to do an engine swap to the VW Deisel. I could use something a little better on gas then what I have. Is the older SJ's that hard to get parts for? Would I need that many if there was a differant motor in it ? He is wanting $500 for the SJ - and sofar I haven't ran across a Samurai for under $2000 !! And that was one needing a lot of work but a rebuilt motor. Any info would be great .. Thanks Mac0

$2000 for a Sami is a bit high. Where are you located? They pop up in the local paper here in PA every once in a while for |removethispart|@ $1200. They are usually running and state inspected, some are a little rougher (rustier) than others.
Don't know much about the SJ410. From what I've seen, most guys are doing alot of custom work on theirs. Somebody please correct me on that if I'm wrong. :-/
-
A bit high is what I thought. I was hoping $1000 to $1500 for a fairly good one - Not around here from what I have seen yet. I'm up in Washington State north of Seattle. I haven't looked at this SJ410 yet but from what I am getting off the net is thay may be hard to get parts for. I'm not looking to make a rock crawler or anything like that. Just a ridge runner for playtime and to use for work to keep the miles down on the nice car.
Thanks for the reply ---- Mac0

wassupp!!!!! I to am in the everett area and i think i know the sj410 is it red is it at a driveline shop if so i know it needs more then a motor it needs transfer case and it is from hawaii the top is shot but its not the worst i have seen but it will require alot more work then you are lookin for if you are jus lookin 4 atoy plus the deisel is great for rock crwaling but here in washington they suck in the mud and sand that leaves rock go for the 1.3 or 1.6efi

You could always go for the 229 chevy swap........ ;D
-
Or and 302 Ford. don't like Chevy. no offence
-
No offence taken, I like them all. I would like to see one with a 302 in it.
Isnt tracker chevrolet now? ;D
-
The drive line place ---- That be the one. A friend of mine was down that way a week or so ago and saw it. I haven't went down yet to take a look. I guess he has a few of them down there that he is working on. I'm thinking you might of talked me out of it !!! But might drive down to take a look and talk with the guy. Any others for sale in those parts of the woods ??? I'm up here in Burlington ... I've only seen one for sale here all summer -- and she still has it !!!!!!
-
i am not trying to talk u out of it but it is a big project i have thought about it my self but :o that is sum work! as for there other zuks i beleive they are fake imean toyota based zuks! not true zuki blood hahaha ;D but i see oppurtunitys all the time  the buy and sell ,little nickle, but 2,000 isnt bad  if the motor&body and the top are good has it been offroad is the motor good stock carb? lota questions i see them around so if you are not in a hurry iwill keep u posted also do you prefer no motor or do you want to drive it home?this will help me find one ;) i am in marysville :o

I'm looking for a winter prodject - but I will admit to not wanting a complete over haul right now. If I get to I think I will still take a ride down and see about that one -- One never knows !!
I'm new to this so this is a dum question -- What do you mean "Toyota Based" ??
I would like one that is running so I could use it while I am gathering up the parts for the Diesel convertion but depending on the price and condition I would look at one that is not. That's why I was thinking of that SJ410.
That other one I think is a 86' - 5 speed - rebuilt motor and trans - I think just the stock motor from the looks of it. The body looks straight but needs a little here and there. The interior is pretty much shot - need seats - dash cracked up - no radio - front window cracked. The top looks OK from a-far but not so good up close - (Kind of like some girls I know !! ) It probably has a few good years left. I called the person about it and they said it has a lift kit and custom bumpers -- By the looks of it - (from an untrained eye !! ) - the lift kit is a set of home made shackels front and back and the bumpers are home made to. I will admit they don't look bad though. It has custom wheels - ( they would have to go ) - and bigger tires . All with differant amounts of tread. So it would need new tire and wheels.
Why a stock carb. ?? - Another dum newbie question I'm sure !!
I'm not in a hurry at all -- been looking for one since probably last spring. But thinking about it - my wife is gone next week -- that would be a great time to sneak it through the radar and under the fence to the garage !! Oh-well -- if she cuts me off for buying one more toy I guess it will be more time to work on it !!!
Sorry for all the questions - and thanks for the reply's --- Mac0

Based on your description of the samurai, I'd say it's more like a parts truck. Offer the guy something ridiculous and see if he bites, if not, keep looking. Sounds like some of the other folks out your way would be happy to keep an eye out for you. Patience & Good luck! :)

How about a 89 tracker i know where their is one it has rod  knockin but it is a brand new motor it has rock slides a pre runnner bumper red white soft top(not the best condition) EFI its  straight but its not pretty it needs some paint oh did i mention its like $400  :o but thats if you are willing to change your mind and i got all the interior you need for it and a new top cheap! so let me know it is in mount lake terrace, toyota based: shortend toyota frame 22r engine and only a zuki skin its disgusting to see them torture a samurai like that >:(
-
FISH ON !!!!
That sounds more like what I was looking for. Could you highlight on the "toyota based: shortend toyota frame 22r engine " -- Maybe a little on the outlook of these " Toyota Based" machines and off roading - maybe compared to the Samurai. I'm assuming that they are not as good but for a guy who likes to cruise the logging trails with a beer chasing grouse and not into the extream trail breaking it may be a good option. Do they do the engine convertios on these ?? WoW -- sorry -- a whole new set of questions now !!!
-
buy an 87 toyota cut the frame remove the body shorten the drive line move your springs back buy a sammy body fab it on and there is your fake ass suzuki!!!!!!!!!!! >:(
-
"fake ass suzuki" -- I guess you don't really like those trackers !!!
I had a Toyota 4x4 for quit a long time before and it seemed to get me where I needed to go. A shorter one could be more fun ...
How might I go about getting the info I would need to go see this "Red headed step child" of the Susuki family ???
Oh- By the way -- that last post I had and the "Fish ON" comment . Reading it back - someone may take the wrong inpression -- My meaning was that "I'm the fish" -- just incase anyone was wondering !!!
-
it is located behind the schucks in mount lake terrace no appointment required it is the managers but do not talk to him i did but he is kind of an a#*hole so if you are interested jus come back with $400  and hand it to him and say thats all u got 8) an i know he will take it ,its better i think then that sj410 as far as the cheapest winter project roadless gear has the 1.6 master rebuild for like $400 dollars and it is complete evereything you need :o . I have a88.5 samurai and a 91 tracker project buggy(TRUGGY) so jus about any stock parts u need i got ;D
-
Have you looked on autotrader.com ? you would be suprised what you can find on there ...
-
Dare to be different 8); buy the SJ410. Besides you're in the same neck of the woods as HAWK's and they have every part imaginable.
-
Thanks for the info there Bug_D . Spent a little time looking at the trackers on the net at home last night, even stopped by a dealer who was closed and looked at an old one they had in the back row .. "It's just not me" !!!! I think I better keep looking for the little Asian Warrior.
I looked there on the autotrader.com also - out to 100 miles away and they go from $1700 to over $4000 !!! I think I may just sneak back into the woods and wait till something else comes by. Cash is in hand - just need opportunity .
Brace --- who or what is "HAWK's" ??? I'm sure it is just another newbie question !!
Thanks for all the help so far .. I'll just be sitting here in the tree line !!!! Mac0
