Title: Sidekick/Tracker Tyre Question
Post by: ZukkinMad on October 24, 2003, 02:26:36 AM
Hi,

I'm current running a 2"Calmini lift kit with 11/8" Rocky Road Coil Spacers giving me 3" in suspension lift on a 4 door sidekick.

I currently have some 15x8 rims and wondered if the 30x11.50x15 Super Swamper TSL SX would pose any problems with regards to rubbing because of the width? or would I have to get wheel spacers to help?

Thanks

ZukkinMad

The backspaceing on the rims
is going to be the factor, I have
a set of 8x15- 2.5" backspace rockcrawlers
and 33x 13.5/15 LTB Swampers I
get a little rub on full turns but none
from compresson in the wheel well,
Then again I have 7" total lift and
clearanced wheel wells, but I didn't
cut the wells, I just used a BFH and
rolled over the edges that were
sticking out, and some fender trimming.

I build my own stuff ;D
4" body and 3" Suspension.

I asked my wife today if she
would mind if I lifted it 6" more
as she struggled to get in, and
she gave me the "Don't You Dare"
look, and said it's tall enough!!
(she's 5'3" tall) LOL but she likes
to drive it tho, says the guys all
check her out in it.. lol ;D

Well I started with the research, and then the concept
of what I had to do, funny thing is, basicly Cal-Mini
did the same thing, with some more parts, I made
spring spacers, front and rear, 3" Rear, about 2" in
front, cut those down from 3" which were too tall,
and made it ride hard. I built strut spacers, like C/M
I got a longer shock by looking thru the Gabrial shock
catalog, turns out some Toyota P/U ones had what I
needed, right length, internel bump stops, stud on the
top and eye on the bottom. I built a upper control arm
spacer for the rear end to ease the balljoint and make
the rear brake proportioning valve pressure right, was
too light as it thought the kick was in hard brakeing
with the back end up in the air.

I had to dis-conect the front brake line to reach without
stretching, from the strut, as well as the rear E-brake
lines get a bit tight, so I bent the bracket to ease the
strain, I retained the stock A-arms and rear lower
control arms.  All in all it was an easy mod, just took
a little time to get it all together, funny thing is I called
Cal-Mini when they were still here in So. Cal and asked
about a lift or longer springs, they didn't have any and
said you can't just make longer springs, they need to be
calculated, problem is a custom set of springs cost about
$700,  :P  So I just made and used the spacers.

I never dropped the Axle, as why ??? lose clearance
and now we see all these broken axles, Hm......  I
wonder if that is a problem they have???  I never
broke and axle yet, so that might be a flaw in design.

Thanks for all the great info.  I too have never broke a rear axle and mine is welded.  The front i have blown up once and i have only been on 3 runs with it.  I am planing on doing the rear axle in front convo.  I was gunna do the steel case but that was a little more money then i wana spend.  lata Stu

hey wild,
4 inch body lift? did you use 3X4 square tubing? and what problems did you run into or modifications that would go beyond the obvious ie. shifter extentions, steering extensions. thanks for any info, i think i might try 4" but not sure.

Ya pretty much used 3" .250 wall square tubing
with a plate welded in the middle, err about 3"
down with a nut welded to it to screw onto the
Sidekick body studs.

Used 10x1.25 mm nuts with thin sholders to weld
on for better penetration ;), and the .250 wall tube
is bomb proof, I mean Nuke Bomb proof, overkill,
could be half that and be fine.

I made square plates 3" square, 3 per mount,
6 mounts, each have a hole drilled in the center
to put the stud through, or the welded bolt that takes
the place of the body stud. You can use 3/8" bolts here
as you supply the nylock nuts to put it all back together
with.

The whole thing goes back together with the stock body
rubbers in the stock locations on the frame, but now with your new
body lift spacers on top of em. ;D.

I think I would have liked round plates instead of square, as they
don't snag on stuff as you turn them into place.

fronts are easier, 4" plate top and bottom, top plate has a nut welded
inside, bottom has a bolt (metric) welded the same length as the bolt
you took out of the stock Kick/Track. Screw the mount into place thru
the rubber and put a bolt in the top to hold the body down.

Go to the rubber hose store, and get some Marine grade exhaust hose
and put it in place of the stock fuel fill hose, extend the steering, watch
the front brake lines so they don't get stretched, in fact remove the bolt
in the steering shaft, your air intake hose now don't fit on the 8V engine
cars and some other lines get a little snug on the pasenger side below
the Battery, emissions evap lines too get a little tight.

Need Help E-mail me, I can get the hose too for you guys that don't
have a good supply for rubber goods.

Cut it length wise  ;)
No openings for mud to get into ;D

I need to post a pic, I'll see if I can find one.

OK here's a pic, not snaped looking at the mount,
but it's there if you look between the tire and the
body, see there are 2 peices, 1x3" and 1x1" together
is 4" high, I need to draw a diagram and I'll post it
as a link. cause it will be a bit map pic.

I'm running with the Calmini 6'combo and the front seemed so sagged so I put a 3/4 inch spacer in and know it seems too tall \ / . does anyone make a shorter spacer like maybe 1/4 to 1/2inch?

Hey Badger,

I believe you might be able to adjust the camber on the front wheels.

Try adding another stock rubber bushing. :) They are about 1/3 inch.

Or take a sander to your #/4 inch spacer.

Good Idea,I was just thinking of adding just another stock one and save the 3/4 inch ones when my springs sag a little more.My CVs were really at a bad angle not that my tires weren't angle out that bad.It would pull my right side axle out of my diff but maybe the snap ring is worn or just needs to be readjusted(rebend).
