Title: New 92 Tracker need advise
Post by: Dusty on October 16, 2003, 03:55:01 PM
Before I post many thanks to Eric the Ad. and the rest of you who frequent the board.   I have spent the past few days reading the many pages of previous posts and I have learned a ton.  I have two questions, here is the background.   I just bought a 92 tracker 4x4 from a guy who usually towed it behind his motor home.  It has 90,000 on it and looks to be in good condition.  I believe everything is stock with the exception of super winch hubs.  The first week I got it I changed the oil, the gear oil in front and rear Dif, tranny, and transfer case.  I also changed the spark plugs and they looked like they had never been changed.  When I bought it the check engine light was on and the guy said he had taken it to his local mechanic to have the light checked out and his mechanic said everything looked fine and not to really worry about it.  I thought I was getting a good deal so I bought it anyway.  My question is should I take it to the dealer to have it checked out and fork over the money for them just looking at it?  What should I rule out that could be causing the check engine light to stay on?  My other question is this.  I bought this vehicle for dual purpose I commute to school each day and don't have the money to do anything fancy with it, but I do like to hunt/fish/explore on theweekends off road, nothing too sketchy though as far as trails go.   I will need new tires in the next 6 months.  I plan on keeping the same rims, so my question is; What tires would serve me best in a dual role, get decsent gas milage, yet perform well in the nevada desert/rock?  What other sized tires will also fit on the stock rims?  Thanks in advance for the replies

I ran 30x9.50-15 AT tires on my 93 Tracker with no problems. For the check engine light, remove the drivers side speaker in the dash. Just inside the hole there is a switch, push it up or down, it doesnt matter, and the light will go off. I started off like you, mine was a daily driver and I decided to ride in the woods next to my house. Well now look what happened  :o  , 33's and 6 in lift  ;).

Later,
Bill

Also another thing is that I don't know what state you live in, but here in NJ you automatically fail if they see the check engine light on.  (I don't know why they do this, all they have to do is open the hood and look under there and make sure it's not missing LOL ::)  Just kidding.  But seriously, it's worth looking into.     Dave

for rubber i would go with some BFG's or Goodyears.  BUT some radial Swamper might be right up your alley.

Well as far as rubber,I run bf goods under our rig.
it's got a 2" susp(with new 2000 springs)and a 2" body.
We put the mud terrains on because of the fall weather way up here in b.c. for all the muddy roads. We were going to use the all terrains first but got a good deal on these new.
The allterrains are an excellent all aroung tire that wears really well,to a lesser extent the muds.
We used 235/75 15's and they work perfect and ride really good as well.
