Title: unmodified idler arms
Post by: brlj on September 25, 2003, 11:46:48 AM
I was just wanting to see how many Tracks/Kicks are running unmodified idler arms here? I will do a write up and submit it to Eric and he will check it out. Im sure some rearranging and changing will need to be done to the article by Eric so hang on guys..   ;)

Later,
Bill

Are you talking about the Idler itself or the bracket?
Ive never bent a bracket. Well at least not since I bought the Idler arm brace from Calmini. They should rename that piece Idler arm BRACKET brace! Cause I bend Idlers all the time. :-[ Actually its pretty common problem once you add a front locker.

Im talking about modifying the bracket where it bolts to the frame and adding the piece of angle at the bottom of the idler which you bolt to the A-arm mount. I saw you have the piece of angle at the bottom, you still bend them? The bracket where it bolts to the frame will break at the lower bolt holes.

One thing too is that brace that Calmini sells doesnt work on a Tracker, it is for Sidekicks only (at least thats what the salesman told me.).

That's pretty odd it wouldn't work on a tracker too.  Seems like it would cost more on a joint developed car to have different mechanicals for the same function. Trim I can understand but given the otherwise identical nature of the kick/track I think the Calmini guy might be wrong on this one.  Then again he might be right, stranger things have happened.

You can make it fit a tracker by adding a little tab to the frame. its certainly easier than building a whole new bracket! There is a close up pic on my home page on the bottom left that says Idler bracket.

My arm is unmodified and I haven't had a problem with it in the last 2 years (probably shouldn't have said that). Its not a rock crawler though but its seen a lot of hard use

Mike,

Ok , I see now what you did with that bracket. I made my own lower support out of 1/4" angle bolted to the A-Arm mount. I didnt build a whole new bracket , but I welded more steel to the existing assembly. Ill do the write up and let you check it out also to see if it warrants an article. :)

Thanks,
Bill
