Just got a '96 Tracker with an Auto Trans and could use some advice. I have no idea when/if the timing belt was changed. How difficult is this to do? Is the 1.6 a clearance engine or will there be problems if the belt breaks? Any advice on making the Auto Tranny survive?

I know that the 8V does not have clearance problems, but I'm not sure on the 16V. I need to find out though, my 97 Tracker is pushing the age limit of timing belts, I'll change it before I get it back on the road.

Changing the timing belt isn't that hard the hardest part is to take the pulleys and belts off to access the timing belt.

Thanks guys. I took the Tracker to a local shop today and they changed it for $108.00. The mechanic used to work for a local Chevy Dealer so it was no problem for him and the price was right.
