Has anyone done the gas tank lift as described in Hagan's article? What was your experience? Was it worth it? I'm still on the fence a little bit.
-Eric
-
If you have done a body lift definately do it. It's great. I always would drag my tank untill I did the mod. Now the 33x12.50 spare is the first thing to hit (still in original location) If you have an afternoon, a grinder and a welder, you can do this mod and you wont be dissapointed.
-
i will be doing it somtime in the next few weeks. I'll write somthing about it after i do it.
-
I'M THINKING IT MUST LOOK BETTER BEING PUT BACK UP WHERE IT BELONGS, CLOSE TO THE BODY ???
-
Anyone just put a fuel cell in it's place????I'm thinking of doing one that bigger the the stock milk jug size tank to get a lil more MPT(mile per tank).
-
I been wondering the same thing about a bigger fuel cell.
-
How far are you'll driving ??? I can wheel for two days in the mountains and not need to come out or gas.
Zig
-
It's not the wheeling that sucks so much gas, it's getting there.
I get 10 MPG pulling a hill with stock gears and 33" Swampers.
I know when I swap gears to the 5:83s I will pick up some more MPG
but I never got more than 23 MPG bone stock brand new, and that was
cruising less than 65 freeway. Average miles per tank - 200 and you
need gas bad, hope there is a station someplace close, so to be safe,
we always stopped at about 150 miles and filled up. this equals stopping
for gas about every 3 hours, which is fine for the women folk, but every
time you stop add 1/2 hour to the arrival time... *sigh* takes forever
to get someplace like that.
-
yea, I only get around 180/tank on 33's. But after 2.5-3 hours in the truck, I,m ready to get out for a minute and pump some gas, and 90% of the time I travel solo, so I dont have to worry about the 30min. thing. 5-10 and I'm rolling again ;D

Along with what Midnightrider said I think this is what he's thinking of.
Doubling your 4WD's travelling range with the Long Ranger fuel tank. You can now replace your existing tank with the convenient Long Ranger, saving precious luggage and passenger space, and providing safer, more economical fuel storage for long trips. You'll minimise inconvenient refuelling stops and buy your fuel at the best prices, thereby recouping the cost of installing a replacement or auxiliary tank.Long Ranger fuel tanks are available either as a replacement of the original unit or as an auxiliary to it. In certain vehicles, both a replacement and an auxiliary can be fitted for those extra long trips in remote areas.
Constructed from 2mm aluminised steel, Long Ranger tanks are Mig welded during manufacture. Baffles are fitted at the time of manufacture, as are fuel pick-up and breather outlets. Fuel expansion capacity is catered for in the design.

what the heck does that mean?? i've seen it in so many forums!!! i don't get it!

If you have have a 3" BL, i think a tank lift is a very good idea. you can also do it with a 2", but may need some more work.
Here is my tank lift thread. (has pics too)

I've been searching and reading for 2 hours now and can't match up someone that's raised the gas tank on a 4-door with a 2" body lift.
Feel free to chime in now with the answers/pics/information.
The tank is wider and larger than the 2 doors, so it'll be different i'm sure, and most of these dudes seem to have a 3" body lift to start with for the tank lift.
-
I am gonna lift mine out of nicessity,to appease the local cops >:(
-
Shouldn't the tank be low for safety purposes? I mean, if you get rearended and your tank is higher, its more likely to get crushed and cause a fire/explosion right? Or am I way off base.
-
Actually in stock form the tank hangs below the frame rails some. Lifting the tank 3-4" pretty much centers it vertically in the frame so it is much more protected...
-
Sorry, It doesnt fit. the 4 door has a wider frame. :'(
Mike
How much wider is it? I just tore the body off of a 92 four door frame and although I didn't measure, it looked the same. If the 4 door frame is wider, then what about the coil cups on the rear axle? And what about the engine mounts?
-
THe cop told me mine was too low and if i got rearended it would explode....he said i should buy fuel cell and put it where my rearseat used to be ::).....
-

Mike
Mike, I hate to disagree with you, but I measured a 92 four door frame and a 93 2 door frame. The frames are the exact same width. The 4 door's tank is around 5" longer front to back than the 2 door's tank(and the coresponding crossmembers are 5" further apart in the 4door). The 4 door's tank is a little wider than the 2 door's as well. So wide, in fact, that the pinch weld is wider than the frame's opening! The 4 door tank is too wide to lift the tank even in a 4 door frame unless you bend the pinch weld in or cut it off.
To fit a 4 door tank into a 2 door frame would require major fabrication and frame modification to work. To raise the tank on a 4 door, you need to cut the pinch welds off or bend them in on the sides of the tank, just to clear the frame, then you still need to fab some higher mounts. You could always put a 2 door tank into a 4 door and it would have plenty of room for lifting it, but you'd still need to fab some mounts to fill in the 5" gap in the mounts and you're losing the range of the 4 door tank...
The easiest tank to lift is a 2 door tank in a 2 door frame with at least 3" of body lift. You drop the tank, cut off the old tank mounting brackets then clamp the tank to the round crossmembers with heavy duty 2" muffler clamps with the pinch weld on top of the rear-most crossmember and underneath the forward crossmember...
-
like digger has said, lifting a 2 dr tank in a 2 dr is easiest, esp with a min of 3" BL.
if you can weld good, you can just make up a new rear section.

Here is my 5 cents. I've made 3" bodylift, gas tank replace (from Grand Vitara) and 3" gas tank lift. You can see some photos here (http://dve.ru/blog/photo/fuel_tank_lift/).
Other photos are here (http://dve.ru/blog/photo/). And my blog is here (http://dve.ru/blog/) (NOTE: IN RUSSIAN ONLY!).

You got me, I ment longer. I knew what I ment it just didnt come out right. I must have been tired. :P Even if you cut and moved the crossmember the rear diff would hit the gas tank so it will not fit.

Stock gas tank fuel capacity is 42 litres. After mod 70 litres.

Hello All,
Just lifted my tank 3 inches...Heres how I done it.
Removed tank
Cut the front bracket off three inches
Removed the whole rear x-member.
Made new brackets for the front out of 2" strap 1.5"long with nut welded to it.
Made new x-member for back out of 2"angle steel that is 1/4 thick and 30"long
Set the angle flush with top of frame and in 1/2 inch.
Mounted tank to front
Drilled hole from bottom in back for 2"angle.
That is with 2" body lift now my tank sets 1/4 away from the body.Looks much better a is also in a safer place. My rear x-member was getting cancer so bye-bye.
