Title: alternater
Post by: jimbob9576 on May 04, 2005, 11:31:20 AM
??? i need some help.  I have a 1990 stock samurai.  I just put a new engine in it.  My problem is it keeps burning up altenators.  I put two on it so far and it is still doing it. It is doing it while the truck is parked and shut down.

when you say burning the alt does the alt stop charging or is it shorting out the diodes in the alt? what kind of condition is the battery in? check to make sure that the engine block is grounded to the body and that it is not corroded. how long did it take for the second alt to stop working?

after you shut it off, pop the hood and take a wrench or some kind of steel and put it next to the alternator and see if it acts like a magnet? if so disconnect your battery and go from there.

Sounds like your battery is toast. That or the wiring is melted ...

I assume your talking stock stuff here and not some "1 wire" swapped in GM alt ...

I'd unwrap the harness and inspect the harness thouroughly for shorts too.

put a volt meter on your battery and make sure one of the alternators did not reverse charge your battery?you def have a weird one going on there.

my 2c, goto wally world and spend $14 to $20 on a cheep meter, learn how to use it and then start testing everything you can.  its is SOOO worth the lil $$.  i use mine all the time and has saved me lots of time and cash tracking stuff down from light bulbs to speeker wire shorts ;)
