Title: Hagens "Adventure"
Post by: Zukipilot on July 18, 2004, 10:19:12 PM
Hagen "Adventure" Update: July 19,2004.

Mike called last night and after the first day of trail riding on the Adventure he's Kicking Butt like usual ;D 8) ;D He sucessfully made the first day of trails with little or no carnage and is already hearing comments about how impressed people are with how the Geo handles trails. He also said is looking forward to day two of trails tomorrow (Tuesday).

Events started Saturday but they did not hit the trails till yesterday. Today will be an all day ride on the asphalt to get to their next distination for trail riding on Tuesday.

So far, so good ;) I'll updaye you'll again when I hear back from him (hopefully Tuesday night).

Later,
Zig

Zukiworld can be extremely proud by the representation that Mike Hagen gave at the first stop of the 2004  Ultimate Adventure. I'm convinced that most guys on the trip were already convinced of his or the rigs or boths capabilities before the event even started from the comments said about Mike. And though most of you are convinced that his driving skills and rig capabilities are the only things that were expected to stand-out in this trailride; us at Rockport were very impressed by his knowledge, kindness and suprising humbleness  that he demonstrated while he dislplayed his ongoing smile. Mike is more than welcomed at Rockport anytime.
I got an email shortly before the Adventure began from a friend that stated "do you know that Mike Hagen is coming to the park for the Ultimate Adventure?" I honestly had no idea who Mike Hagen was, now I completely understand the enthusiasm behind the email.

Debbie,
Welcome to Zukiworld :) Glad to hear that you (and everyone else there) was as impressed with Mike as I was the first time I met him. He is a great guy. I hope all went smooth on the first stop for the adventure (for the roders and the Rockport staff). After checking out your web site, I cant wait to get up there and ride ;)

Hello Debbie,

Thanks for the update on Mike... I'd like to take this time to invite you to post on this Adventure Forum when your park has events and play days coming up. Having more places to wheel and knowledge about upcoming events is always a good thing and would help us out quite a bit.

Thank you, Eric

Just got off the phone with Mike. It sounds like he is having a blast. He's a little less than half way through the event and I asked him if he'd do it again and he replied, "yeah every week if I could." :) By all reports the IFS Sidekick is doing well and making some believers. The group's next stop is Hagen's back yard, litterly. The Apple Valley orchard featured on the RPM http://www.rpm4x4.com web site is where they'll be next. If you're in the area, head over to see some world class rigs in action.

Hey Eric,
Thanks for the invite to post events. Illinois is the most antirecreational state there is and we're working hard to provide oppurtunities regardless and totally privately funded. It's great that the midwest now has several off-roading oppurtunities. Without these few areas in the midwest, the Ultimate Adventure would have traveled on elsewhere.
And it's great to hear that Mike is continuing to do well on the rest of the trip. We had 2 vehides still at our park at 8pm last night trying to get things together to proceed on. ::)

Ok, this is going to come off a little weird but here it goes. The way every one speaks of this mike fel-la, it’s interesting. I don’t know him one bit but by it’s seems like every envy’s him, but in a good way. Every one make him out to be a great person, and rider, he must be if he got picked to be where he is right? It’s almost like; he’s the best of the best. If you guys ever get together for a weekend of riding on the northeast cost, let me know I’d like to meet every one some time. Just wanted to give my opinion, thanks Pierre, Show them what a zuk is capable of doing Mike

Pierre,

Mike is one of the original Sidekick/Tracker builders, and has custom built his Tracker into one of the best, most durable Trackers out there. On top of the he is a great person that likes to help out others in any situation, espically when it comes to building their Kicks/Trackers. Plus he can occasionally be a little crazy on the trails :o As far as "the Best of the Best", I dont know about that one, I think I can take him ;D But the only chance we've had to go head to head battle on the trail, my damn timing belt broke in the middle of the Rally Race >:(  Oh well, I'll get him next time 8).

i think i have only seen 1 IFS truck go before Mike(an s-10 :o) but i think the way calmini makes their kits is better then the way then would get a 6in kit from Sky Jacker with a crattle for all the stock A-arms and stuff to go on, so mike sould do great!

GO MIKE!

Im back!  ;D Im really tired. Im really short on time but I will get back online later tonight to post more.

First Id like to say thanks to Debbie for posting an update on Zukiworld.  ;) Thats really cool. I was the first one to show up and got lots of time to talk to them. Both her and her husband were very nice people.

Heres a really quick rundown.

Every breakage I had took less than 10 minutes to fix so I was never really shut down all week.

In rockport I broke a LF outer CV and rear u joint
At the Cliffs I didnt break anything
Not at my dads either (Apple Valley Farms)
At Gilbert, during the sound check I broke a clutch cable :P I also broke another LF cv an pinched a bead.

The little Geo did a great job. ;D

Mike

I cant completely explain the event but I can drop some info. More to come later tonight.

On a scale from 1 to 10 Id say the trails were a 7 as far as difficulty. I wouldnt expect more since we did have to drive over 1800 miles throughout the adventure. If every trail was a 10 we probabally wouldnt have any rigs left by the end of the adventure! However on the last day of the adventure Pewe had us on a trail I would consider an 11! When I started looking at it I didnt even think we would get 30 feet in. People who have been in Johnson valley said it seemed similar. It was insane. I sent pics of that to explosive before I started typing so mabey we will see them soon. :-/ Thanks for that explosive.  ;)

I didnt get over the "camera jitters" untill we got to my dads place. The first day I cought myself .... not neccicarily driving badly ... but not as good as I could have.  The next day was a drive day and I dont see the cameras too much. 3rd day we wheel Cliffs off road park in northern Illinois. The cameras didnt get to mee to bad. The trails were so tight that I really had to focus on what I was doing so I wouldnt wipe out both sides of the rig. I had to pull the mirrors just get through the trees. their were times when it would have been difficult to shove a piece of paper between the trees and my paint. I was shocked that I actually got through here with so little body damage.

After we got out of the trails me and my passenger went to town to use the carwash cause the local one had a huge line. We just dumped all the coins we had in the center console into the machine. The rig was clean and we had 3 and 1/2 minutes remaining..... ::) ...... so we broke out the shampoo and pressure washed each other! ;D then conditioner with a spot free rinse! 8) When we got back to camp everybody noticed we were clean an acused us of cheating an getting a motelroom just for the shower! Several people liked that idea and followed suit. The camera crew cought it on tape. It was pretty funny.

Ill be back in a minute... I need a drink. :P

On thursday we stopped at my dads place. Its not hard to look good in your own back yard. ;) The camera guy asked me what it was like having the UA stop there an I replied "Its like having you favorite rock band doing a private preformance!"  8) It was really cool. On friday we had another road day. Something unbeliveable happened but Im pretty sure Id better let them cover that. Saturday we wheeled in Gilbert MN. its an old Iron mine. Very cool place. We were wheeling some cool trails and just started saying wow the week is over and we never got in over our head... which was a worry of mine. We thought we were home free when Pewe brings us to a trail that had never been run. The rocks were frickin huge! :o Now I was in over my head! Only 6 people entered the coarse, nobody else was willing to try it. I thought I was out of my league. some how.... I did like 3/4 of the coarse when I got hung up on the bellypan at the t-case crossmember and all 4 tires were dangling by minimum 1 foot. The crossmember bent up so far that my lever was stuck in 2lo and rear driveshaft pulled out of the T-case.  :-[ We winched it out of the canyon and reassembled the driveshaft. Apparently all the added crossmember support made it act like a spring. I put the driveshaft back on and everything was fine.So long story short, it wasnt broke, just dislocated.  ;D I know this sounds bad but the coarse was really nasty, only 2 rigs made it through the coarse without winching up and out of the bank. It was definately an Ultimate Adventure.  ;)

"WOW" 1800 miles and not a scratch. ;D Can't wait for pictures and the video.
I watched last years Adventure and it looked like Pewe likes to drive with a heavy foot and not so much of picking the best line. He destroyed that AVALACHE he was driving. You think with all the $ they had in it, it wouldn't have broke so much ;D

I turned down the big slab and drove off a huge ledge. did some belly pan testing. ;)

Mike

We really need an uploader. Is an uploader something you can buy? Why is kilbassa gone? Is $ an issue? Eric, can zukiworld possibly support something like that?
Title: Re: Hagens "Adventure"
Post by: explosivo on July 26, 2004, 03:21:45 PM
I don't know what happened to kielbassa.com... it just went by-by a week ago :(

The new uploader was down for an hour or two tonight, but that problem was resolved, and shouldn't be an issue any longer.

However, to prevent any downtime, Mr. Bewley is going to set up an uploader using the uploader script I've been using shortly. No more downtime, I hope ;)

Yes, that's right, there'll finally be a Zukiworld uploader! YAY! (the current eye-irritant one will still stay up as a backup, though, incase anything happens).

Tim Hardys little sami is legendary. Both the rig and the driver are amazing. He is also a really down to earth nice guy. Another person I met on this trip who was suprisingly a really nice guy was Chris Durram. (sp) For those of you not familiar, hes one of the top rockcrawler drivers in the sport. I kinda expected him to act like a rock star, but he couldnt be farther from it. Jared Jones from 4 wheel & off road was pretty cool too. Hes kind of a clown... in a good way.  ;D Hes always got a smile on and having a good time. Actually the whole 4W&OR staff were really cool. I didnt expect them to take me in like that. I felt like Id been hangin around with them for years.  8) Id give you guys more pics but Im only allowed to drop some teaser photos untill after the video and mag come out. So much stuff happened I could post all day and not run out of stuff to say.... of coarse it takes me an hour to type a paragraph! :P

From my part of the world of wheeling, Tim Hardy is one good guy. Need a shirt, he'd offer his no matter how dirty. Always there sitting in the back, ready to help out.
His Sami is built on the KILS (Keep It Light Stupid) effort. That sheetmetal protects the drivetrain between the frame rails and seats the passengers sit on, though on occasions, protrusions of rocks do hit the seat edges. The bumpers are exhaust pipes, tires seem to be bigger than in past years (take a look at the wheelwells and body lines), and you gotta just love his 'stach.

Sounds like it will hit news stands around Oct, which will be the Nov issue. I would expect vids to be on sale about the same time. They said for sure they would be availible in time for christmas. Its going to be hard for me to wait that long.  :'(

Mike

Mike,
Could you check with Rick and see if we put some $'s up front, would he "reserve" us some copies and send them directly to us as soon as their done. I would be willing to be ship them out to Zukiworld members if he could just ship them to me. It may cost us a little more in shipping but I think we would get them quicker than waiting on the Mag. and the ordering them individually. Just a thought. What to you'll think?

To add to Zigs:

The pics in the mag are limited on the space, and editor's choice.

For you? You were there! We have 3 pics and a few paragraphs to imagine it :o :P ;D

Man, it happened so fast... Its a blurr! Plus their was some drinking... ::) After wheeling of coarse. Plus Id like to see what it looked like. Im sure it will look different on video than it felt.

I still cant belive a magazine actually gave me a chance. I think it says a lot about Rick Pewe and the crew at 4 Wheel and off road magazine. Obviosly they have an open mind and a willingness to take chances. After last years IFS disaster and the comments I overheard from several people (before they saw it wheel) I think it was a big risk on their part. After the Adventure was over I went up to Rick to let him know how gratefull I was that he took that chance.

Mike

Oh yea, Zig, Ill check into the video thing. Im guessing that they will make a huge run of those vids. I doubt they will run out... but just to be safe Ill check on that.

I'm seeing lots of body damage on the other rigs from other pics, (  http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB68&Number=564146&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=2  )

Did you have any? I like the full sizes on jeep trails. 8)
The pic of Tim taking the line around the rock and tree in the first link too.

The local paper did an artical on the UA. I thought some of you might like to read it. Heres a link www.chetekalert.com On the left hand menu click on sports, its the second story.

As for body damage on the last day at the end of the last trail I got o little ding behind the gas door.

From the Chetek ALert: "Mike lives, sleeps, eats and breaths 4-wheeling," (Ed) Hagen pointed out.

Hmmm... Would have never guessed! :)

Two things kinda weird here.... First I thought we were not suppose to put anything more than a teaser on the net. From what I understood, Its suppose to be Petersons story.  :-/ Its on pirate, 4x4wire, and pavement sucks!

Second, How is it that with all those pics... Im not in any of them... not even in the background.  Im not even in the group photo. :P

Guess I will have to wait for the video! ;D

I think it's a clear cut case of IFS envy. ;D They don't want the world to know that IFS is just as good or better than the things they are running. Sooner or later the world will know, that we have the best machines on the trail. Fear not young grasshopper for the truth is out there 8)

Sweet write up in the paper 8) One question though; 6-10 ??? What, were they taking the easy lines or just not enough rocks for them?

They just hadnt got to the hard hills at Apple Valley at the time of the interview. The hills got progressively harder as the trail went on. Trust me, they were glad we ran out of time before we got to the really nasty stuff!! ;D

It's all good, none of those pics are really magazine quality. I call it a real good teaser. And it's not like too many are actually action shots... mostly damage shots.

As far as you not in any, it's kinda like you just happened to be at the same park when they were there by coinsidence..., hell not even any body damage to call attention to yourself. You just babyed it the whole time didn't you? ha ha

I think it says a lot about Rick Pewe and the crew at 4 Wheel and off road magazine.

2 things I REALLY like about Pewe and Christian Hazel, They seem to like the "oddball" rigs. Seems like if there is anything in a mag that is NOT ford, chevy or jeep, Then THEY are the ones involved in the article!!
Chris

PS, Been chasing the links posted, there is a LOT out there!!! Looks like a great time!

I'm so giddy I cannot wait for the release of the Video and the Magazine for that matter. Where have I been? Oh yeah I went on vacation on a yacht around the Caribbean, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and up around Bermuda. When all the fun was right here the whole time! Mike I know you did us a fine representation of the ZukiWorld and I'm proud to know of you. PS- PM me your mailing address as I have something to give to you. -CZ 8)

That was awsome that you were able to get invited to the event and put on such a good show... Hope you don't mind me sharing with others  (PM'd Mike & Explosive about using the pictures of Mike and Tim in a Post on Zuwharrie), I'm excited and cant wait to see the coverage.   Any high altitude jumping antics?   That stuff you and DeVinney do is just nuts...
