Title: what coil springs for |removethispart|@ 2" lift?
Post by: Digger on April 23, 2005, 11:29:29 AM
I was noticing that the rear coil springs on a Tracker are just about an inch and a half or more taller than the fronts. Could I swap the rear springs into the front for some front lift? I really don't know why this wouldn't work except for maybe the spring rates. If anyone knows for sure if this will or wont work, please speak up! Thanks.

Springrates for sure.

With the leverage of the front, you'd compress the springs down to the bumpstop... whitfield did this on his four-door with a homemade a-arm and diff drop lift and Cherokee springs, and I assume that Cherokee springs have a higher springrate than those of a Trackick.

Well, I know that the rears have 8 loops of rod and the fronts have 7, but does anyone know the stock front and rear spring rates? Are they close enough to work?

Well, I searched a lot more and came up with the stock spring rates of 156.5PPI for the rears and 452.8PPI for the fronts for the 2 door soft top Tracker. the rear springs would just collapse in the front location. I also found that 4x4 Ranger springs are somewhere around 400PPI, but I don't know how tall they are. What I'm looking for is a slightly softer spring that will give me approximately 2" of lift over stock without spacers using the stock A-arm and coil cups. Anyone able to give me any help on this one?

If you go to wider wheels, you will
be wishing for stiffer springs, I say
do a 2" spring spacer and a 4 door
front spring, should be purfect

I'm already running 15x8" steel wagons with 3.75" of backspacing and 1.5" coil spacers up front. If I added a set of 4 door springs AND 2" spacers, wouldn't that shoot the front end up much higher than 2"? I only want 2" of spring lift and want to do it without spacers if possible...

It would give you 3" lift, I should have
said 1" spacer it's a 2/3 of desired lift
3" needs 2" spacer, and 2" would need
about 1.5" But 4 door springs are what
I thought I needed for a better ride without
sagging

I'm not having any sagging problems now since I added the 1.5" spacers, I just want to get the same effect the spacers are giving me without the spacers. If I pushed the lift to 3" total, wouldn't I be pushing the limits of the cv shafts? Isn't that why Calmini lowers the diff for their 3" lift?

Sort of, 3" is liveable, I would
say 2-3/4" to be safe for the CVs

The angles would be a bit steep also you will be getting a lot less wheel drop which could affect both the handling and off road ability.

Those ranger springs are whats in the front of the Real Red Wagon they are about 12" I think unsprung if you just put those in without dropping the arms down it will be far too much lift
they're a little softer than the stock springs but it works well we finnaly ran the truck at Zuwharrie a couple of weeks ago and it performed very well
out back I've got the cherokee front springs with a 4" drop bracket on the third member(this bracket needs to be incredibly strong the first 2 I made broke the one in there now seems to be doing well)

Right to left
Stock 4-dr (1994) Front
Stock 4-dr (2000) GV 2wd Front
Stock 2-dr 4wd Ranger  Mid 80's (4-cyl)
2"+ Explorer 2wd Lift coils

You could use ranger coils up front, Flip the coil and trim the pig tail so the coil slides over the bump stop.  This will lower it a tad. (Real Red Wagon is using the ford ranger coil up right with the ford lower bolt on mount = +1" or more)

The ranger coil is a little larger dia. and doesn;t fit the lower arm bucket exact, but mine work well even though they are a little larger dia.

I have a set of (4) 4-dr coils for sale,   $40 or trade for a set of your (4) spacers.   I am not sure the exact #'s of lift you will get using 4-dr coils on the 2 dr.

Digger,
Here is a picture of a 4dr front spring next to a 2000 GV V-6 2wd one.  The 4-dr coil looks to be just shy of 11 inches.    ( I no longer have the GV V-6 coils)

Tracker Sidekick 2dr Convertable

452.8 PPI  Front     156.5 PPI  Rear

Tracker Sidekick 4-dr

  508.7PPI  Front    177.9 PPI   Rear

Stocker 2 door softtop front coils are just under 11" also, so these would just be stiffer, getting a little height from being stiffer, but unloaded they aren't any longer... Now what about those 2000 GV V6 2wd ones? What are their rates? They look like they would give at least an inch of spring lift, but how stiff?

I don't have the info on the GV spring rate.  It would be nice to know GV and XL-7 rates.

I got the info from here, but can't seem to get back in...

??? Hey there was a thread with the spring rates and heights, and a vendor for Grand Vitara springs anyone know where it is? I think it has some of the answers to this thread.
