Title: samurai brakes
Post by: mikesova on April 25, 2005, 04:58:43 AM
my brakes on my samurai have kind of locked up.  the brake pads in the front don't want to let go of the disc.  it happend about a couple months ago, and i took the calipers all apart, cleaned off the rust and everything and put them back together again, and they worked good, but now i am having the same problem...this is a no budget project so i really don't want to buy new calipers.  have you guys had this problem before?  maybe i should take them apart again but use grease on the piston and stuff after i put it back together?

I have heard from a friend that if you work a little "miracle oil" under the caliper seal, around the piston, it should help free it up. I never tried it myself, but I have seen this "miracle oil" in the auto section of walmart...

Try some brake or carb cleaner and a little caliper lube

Just either git rid of those things or put full kits in them.  Don't 'guess' with yer brakes.  The gasket is designed to distort and bend when the brakes are applied, then when released they pull the piston back.  I wonder how much you can lube that area and still have the rubber 'O' ring gasket thingee still pull the piston back?  Wonder if the problem is corroded cylinders?  Didja take the pistons alla way out?  What'd it look like in there?  Didja flush the old (and possibly water polluted) brake fluid out and put new in?

Never "oil" break parts, oil swells
the seals and can cause a failure.

Always use clean brake fluid to clean
and lubricate the internal parts, there
are also some special greases for the
slides that will keep them from sticking.
