what is the largest size R&P i should go with in a 85 toy truck front axle. i have heard rumor about the larger sizes compromising the strenght of the pinion shaft due to the fact of it small size.

i think unless your running a v8 dont worry about it in a 2500lb tracker .imo

i heard this from a guy who runs a flatbed yota pickup with a four banger on 38.5" swampers.

how big of tires are you going to be running. I have a zuk with 35's but going to 38's soon and running 5.71. also had a toy pickup daily driver for 4 years 35's and ran 5.71 no problems with pinion shafts.

I've always heard 5.71 is pushing it due to the strength of the pinion gear, most guys don't recommend anything above 5.29's.

blyota that is the same thing i was told. for now i am going to run 37" irocs biasply. i had orginaly said 35 to 37" but i may swap to 40s later and tube it out next year so my duaghter will have something safe to drive.

The land crusier guys don't usually recommend anything above 4.88s.

has anyone done a side by side comparison with the tracker 5.13 and the yota 5.71 . ive had them both apart and bont rember any alarming differences in the size of the pinion shaft. i am running 5.71s in mt track and breaking them is the farthest thing from my mind . have any of you driven a tracker with 34"-35"tires with a stock motor ? break the pinion shaft ya rite ,maybe if you stucket on the revlimiter put in 2nd gear and sidesteped the clutch maybe , but probably not. these trackicks weigh probably 1000lbs less than a toy truck,and have fewer ponies . but i may be wrong

FYI
We have a Sammy owner here in town on 35 baja claws, equiped with a 1.6 8v with the weber carb and he brakes his 4:10's all the time. Granted he's the hardest on stuff of any guy I know, but he still brakes them mini-truck axles and gears in a sammy, with no crawler gears in the t-case. (it's always the either the axles or pinion gear which gives out.)
Our truck-let (if I can still say that anymore) weights in just about as much as a fullsize land cruiser. (~4800lbs loaded with camping gear.)
With the dual t-cases, one with 4.24 and one with 2.2 gears, I think I've got enough torque to brake stuff handily. Which is why I upgraded to larger axles to begin with, I'd hate to think that I'd be taking steps backwards by 'upgrading' gears to something weaker.
But then again, to each their own.

I had a 5500 lb toy on 4.37's and 37's and never broke a ring and pinion. I have numerous club members with toys on 5.29's and they rarely have problems and most of them have 37" tires and dual tcases. I would not go to the 5.71's they are pretty small!

How are you getting a tracker with toy axles and decent sized (33"+) tires down to 2500 lbs?
Remove all glass/fenders/doors?
Incidentally, I put 5.29 gears into my toys. The 5.29 pinion is TINY compared to the stock 4.10. I personally wouldn't go any smaller than 5.29 especially if you have deep crawler gears.

i am actually planning on 4.88 gears and a sammi t-case reduction to give me a good running gear ratio. thanks for all the input.

theirs a grain elivator with scales about 7 miles from my house i may have to go weigh the tracker one of these days.

5:71 Toy pinion is still larger then a stock 3:73 zuk gear. I have 5:71 with a vortec v-6 auto trans and dual toy cases with 5:01 gears in the rear case. no problems under the weight os a zuk or kick. My opinion based on running them.
