I recently bought a 94 Sidekick JX. It shifts ok, but has a grinding noise which is loudest in 5th gear. It's a constant noise. My mechanic said it's probably the throwout bearing, but from what I've been reading, that doesn't sound right. Any ideas?

If it's in all gears, then it would almost have to be throw out bearing or clutch related... Possibly t-case output? Are you sure it's coming from the tranny or is it maybe from the t-case or even the rear diff?

Its not the throwout bearing. That would only make noise if the clutch was pushed in. Does the noise almost go away in 4th? Ive wrecked a couple of bearings on the lower case of the trans by jamming second gear too hard too many times. They are fairly easy to put in as far as trans go. The one I wreck is $22. You dont want to let it go too long or it will wreck hard parts (gears, shafts ect)

It could be the bearings. Hardly any noise in 4th gear, but in 5th gear its loud. Mikerpm4x4 - do I have to drop the trans to replace the bearings? I don't have a repair manual yet.
Thanks for both replies.

Yes you do have to drop the trans and t case.
