OK I've ordered a header for my 16v which should be here in the morning and I'm looking for ideas for the rest of the system like what diameter pipe, muffler type, where to place the muffler to wards front or rear (does it affect performance ?).
I'm thinking of a 2" system (cat less) and a reasonably free flowing muffler just in front of the rear diff. How that all sound ?? (And before someone else says it "Brrooom Brrooom Brrooom" ;D)
What are you guys running and what difference's have you noticed ?

I run with a cheapo turbo muffler. Works for me... don't know how restrictive it is.
-
ok, i have the 8 valve motor, so it will be less significant on mine, but for the 16 valve, headers always frees up a lot of response, and with that a bit more go.
i run headers, but they are a funny design. i havent got, or know of any other vits where i am with headers of different design, so i cant tell if its better or worse.
exhaust, i'm running a 2" cat back through a 'turbo' muffler. one fo those flat ones which are about 300 mm long and a bit oval. before this went on, i had a look through it, and it the pipe enters on one side, and exits in the middle, so i can actually see my hand through the muffler. gives a good note, but my cat stuff everything up. will be either getting a new cat soon, or run catless.
i noticed a bit of a difference when i got my exhaust done, my torque range was about 1500rpms higher than standard. not complaining, and also, the motor revs a lot free-er and higher too.
theres just a lot more response. you can even go for a 2 and a quarter inch because of the 16V efi if you want, but your torque (usable) range might suffer. prolly just stick with the 2 inch, and seeing as you not running a cat, it'll be sweet. and it'll sound every bit as sweet too.
when you get the exhaust made, make sure you get whoever to tuck it up nice and high as possible, and with the muffler before the diff in the original place, make sure the rear diff pinion flange clears it on full compression. my pinion flanges touches the side of my muffler at full compression of rear suspension.
apart from that, theres not much else to it. i sometimes wish i had the 16V efi motor. anyway.....
oh yeah, if you dont mind it being real lound and all, instead of the tiny muffler, just whack on a hot dog resonator instead, and just run that. i'm looking at doing it, but may not sound the way i want cos of my carby. you just cant beat the sound of efi revving out with a real straight through system.
and another thing, if you can, try and make it a 3 piece system, like bolts and flanges. 1st part headers. 2nd part middle section and flange after the muffler. 3rd section, rear piece over the diff and tail pipe.
my was made into one system, and sometimes you may need to take the exhaust off for maintanince/mods, and with mine, i'll have to either cut the system, or remove my diff to get the exhaust off. even my headers are all welded together. i hate it.
maybe i should get a new exhaust, come to think about it.
;D
have fun and enjoy.

I'm running a Calmini Header and a Flowmaster Exhaust with 2 1/4" tubing (my be 2.5) Actually right now I'm basically running an open header since I tore it up on my Moab trip, but that will soon be fixed. Without all of the exhaust leaks it sounds realy good and gave a decent boost to my 8V. One if the best parts of it is you can sit the weight of your vehicle on a flowmaster and it wont tear up like a standard muffler will.

Oh yea, no cat on mine either.

ummm, i apologise if this is hi-jacking, but....
would a shorter exhaust play havoc with back pressure? i was thinking about running the tip out the left hand side in front of the rear tyre and over the chassis rail. no cat. no muffler. or maybe just a small resonator.
thanks.
i like loud.

My exhaust system just consists of a muffler off the stock downpipe thinger and a foot long pipe with a downturn... about four feet long overall... no decrease in performance as far as I can tell... having an outlet in front of the rear tire shouldn't have any adverse effects.

is it loud? he he.
ok, will look into it, thanks.
ps, sorry about the hi-jack Shane.

You may find that setup illegal in OZ, just something to consider.

Sorry, I didn't read the part where you said you weren't running a muffler. That setup might have too little backpressure...

it took a full 15 mins to find this old thread, but i found it.

and regards to mufflers, i will have one in the system. and with the side exit part, i will get the shop to make up 2 rear sections, so i can unbolt and bolt up which ever i need. i know this may seem too much trouble, but i've always wanted a side exit exhaust on my vit, and also a bit louder than what it was before.
at the moment, my pinion flange on the rear diff touches the muffler, and the cats stuffed, and also when the left rear tyre is at full stuff, the diff housing hits the exhaust. never hit when i 1st got it, so must mean i got more travel.
anyway, where i am, i see lots of side exits on old land cruiser 40 series, and 45 series utes. no complaints. theres a few old heeps with side exits, and a CJ with V8 and one out each side.
i know its supposed to be behind any opening door or window, but hell, if i take the top off, my whole car is open. i think i'll take my chances. noise will attract the cops, so maybe a muffler is in order.

I'm running a header from Derek at SuziSport in Australia. Removed the factory exhaust manifold (plus its built in PRE-CAT) along with the main cat, and replaced it with a Magnaflow high-flow cat. After that, a stainless Magnaflow straight-though muffler. After that, the rinky-dinky factory resonator. Didn't change the pipe diameter. I hear that putting a larger pipe will decrease backpressure to the point you may find a decrease the performance of the engine.
The pieces were installed a few weeks apart, and you definitely feel the performance increase as each step occurred (especially the headers). The exhaust is loud and aggressive (but not deep).

We run right the stock manafold and stock down pipe, and connected into the flange 2' exhaust with about 2 feet of pipe, into a glas pack (cherry bomb) muffler then about another foot of pipe, and then a downspout. It dumps right before the rear axle towards the ground. Seems to work great for us.
Super cheap and super easy to setup.

Thanks for the replies team,
I'll run with the 2" and single flow thru muffler and see how that goes. Mine has to exit at rear of the trucklet or I won't pass inspection around here so side exits are out for me.

Hmmm.....popsical orange too ;D

Sweet was the price Bob,
My mate jacked the deal up with a guy he knows at the distributors and like |removethispart|@ US$120 :o I just couldn't go past them ;D.
When ya guna come over too Bob ?? ;D
-
Shane, couldn't you get the Tri-Y? I'm running my Tri-Y's with the original cat, 2" pipe and a single Turbo muffler in front of the diff. Noise is fine, response is a little better and a bit more go throughout the range. Not startling but good.

Oh, the land of Kiwis is still in my distant future! But it IS on my "to-do" list!!!
-
Bob, if you ever get there you gotta have a look a doing some river sledging 8) Did it on my last visit at Christmas and it's a rush.

CJ,
I ordered them with out seeing them and though they would be tri-y too. The stock system is 4 into 1 and Calmini header is 4 into 1 so may be theres a reason for it ???
I'll give em a go seems they were cheap anyway ;D
I solved a long time problem tonight that has been bugging me for near on a year now. I've had sh!t acceleration after 2750 Rpm and even revving the engine on the spot it dies off after 2750ish. Power has been dramatically down and I was struggling to keep ahead of my mates sj413 (on the road) with a 1300 in it the other week end.
I compression tested it last night just for piece of mind and got:
#1 |removethispart|@190psi
#2 |removethispart|@195psi
#3 |removethispart|@190psi
#4 |removethispart|@200psi
So no obvious problem with compression, then this afternoon I when about fitting the header and new fuel filter, plugs, ignition leads, Dizzy cap and rotor thats when I noticed the earth off the dizzy to the fire wall was not connected !!!!!\
Connected it back up and whooa what a difference !!!
Starts better, Idles better, freely revs on the spot right round to 6 grand no problem !! I think I've solved my problem :D I can wait to finish the exhaust and road test it.
Can't fricken believe a little wire has caused some much power loss thou :-[
