I know the "what engine should I swap" has been beat to death ... this isn't that.
I'm comtemplating a buggy build in the future. My goal is to stay lightweight. When it comes to engine/tranny, I think a 2.7l zuk would be perfect (all alloy so light, and mounted the "right" way). Problem is the cost ... I'd like a wrecked xl7 for a donor, but even that isn't cheap (3-4K).
In searching for some other lightweight engine choices (that get around 150hp ... pushed to possibly 200), I see the mazda 626 2.5l as a posibility. It's an all alloy engine so light. Also very easy to find (aka a donor 626 or probe is cheap). Problem is it's tranverse mounted ...
I did find a writeup where someone had mated one to his VW transaxle (custom adaptor), but he also mounted it transverse.
Any got any experience with these? I've never even seen one, so I may go peek at one at a used car dealer ...
Just curious if someone knows if it's just a pipe dream or not.

sounds like more work than its worth, alot of custom this and that. Ford uses the same motors in cougars. Same basic thing as a 3.0ltr duratec thats used in escapes and taurus/sable cars.
-
Same engine as Ford Probe,
Not light, heavier than you would expect, very peaky from my driving of them anyway. Complex with all the computer stuff.
Also have a rep for knocking out bottom ends, don't know if it's deserved.
Also, not cheap because it's high demand.

I've heard that the Mazda V6 are the same block as the Suzuki V6 and the Suzuki Diesel is the Mazda Diesel. The sizes of the V6's are very similar. Maybe a Mazda V6 will bolt to a Suzuki Gearbox with little or no problems. It may be worth getting the tape measure out. :)

running donor for $400 is cheap to me. it's not the high output jap version, but an alloy v6 running in a wreck, I could do 4 bills. And it aint just one, lots around me.

that's what I'd "heard" too ... so that's why I'm wondering. ???

What year is this Probe and is it the DOHC engine or a push rod?

I used to have an 89 Ford probe GT turbo, had a 2.2 l4 turbo mitsubishi motor, and a 5 SPD mitsu trany; "shucks said they did not exist" but i went to ford, when the turbo started to go at 200k miles, and they inspected it, and said it was all stock, cept blow out valuve,
That motor was the snapiest motor i have had experiance with , 7000 redline, boost kicking in at 2500, never had it on a dyno, but i raced quite a few V6 probs, and handed them there arse quickly, it would do 145 in 3rd at 6500, and i could get that in about a quarter mile, when they caned me at UPS, a coper pulled me over, said i came out of the parkin lot at 75, and hit 125 befor he could turn his lights on :P, Somone pissed me off, I blame the young and stupid thing. But it was an all aluminium motor and trans, if one could find one and mount it sideways in a buggy, so you dont need a Transfer case, and use 2 zuk IFS front ends, I bet you it would flat Screem and you could gear it to run in the 3k to 6k range, have a good crawler in the lower gears, and have a fast buggie in the higher gears.
\
FYI i have seen them wrecked selling for 500 - 600 $$ for the whole car, and good runners selling for about 900, event thoe blue book is still 2500, most people dont know its a rare car, but Mitsu had to put that motor in somthing else? My 2.0

That's a Mazda Turbo motor, not Mitsubitchi ;)
I know from all of the turbo rummaging I've done

they are pepy little bastards to. but most turbo motors are :P

'93-97 Mazda 626/Ford Probe ... yes dohc

the turbo I4 was only 88-89 I think ..,.

another good link for these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_engines

I used to have a "93 probe GT with that 2.5l motor, what a riot. As soon as I popped the hood and saw the aluminum v-6 I also wanted to drop it in a Sammy, but never got the chance. That car would run like a cat with it's tail on fire, and was almost as much fun.

Hey Sno you could look at getting a motor from a nissan 240 pretty quick engines, 160 hp stock. mounted north and south.
mate it up to the nissan truck tanny and transfercase. I always thought that the amount of power my 240 had would have been awsome in my zuk.
don't know about the wieght of the engine tho.
I can't remember is transverse east and west mounting?
any interesting topic.

u did say buggie right do like the pros and rear mount it with the trans axle facing front to rear. order ur custom shafts and hook it up to the front and rear axle no t-case so less parts to break it would be awsume. there is a guy that runs u-roc that has this setup with a saturan motor and trans. u have to revers the front or rear r&p but all u have to get is the donor car and no adapters. u said a buggie so u will have to tow it anyway so it dosen't have to go 100 mph anyway. i am assuming it is a rock buggie. but that is just me thinking out of the box and cheep as possible yes u may have to rethink ur buggie design but it would look sweet.

Hey that is a screaming deal on the Probe, I buy salvage all the time ( I'm in the biz) and up here you can't touch one of those thats any good for 3 times that.
I've had several of those engines out and FWIW they are not the same longblock as the the Zuk from looking at them.
It's a straight Mazda engine, big brother to the one from the MX-3 Precidia, as a matter of fact thats an easy swap the 2.5V6 for the 1.8V6 in the Mazda's.
From the auto biz perspective it is a popular motor and does have a rep for popping the bottom end, but considering all the young buck ricer types driving them I guess that should not be a surprize.
They are not light I haven't weighed one but from throwing them around the shop I would guess they are in the 4-500lb range. Tough install with all the electronics
There used to be a place called Kennedy Engine Products in Wash/Oregon that made adapters for darn near anything into darn near anything they might be a good source for an adapter, their stuff was good. Sorry I don't have more info.

maybe you're thinkin the 90* mazda v6 ... the 2.5 60* is supposedly lightest v6 in it's class. I saw some engine weight table (dunno where now) that listed it a 220lbs (aka very similar to the zuk v6.
here's the link where someone used one in a bja bug ... http://www.offroadvw.net/bajawes/Big%20Bad%20Baja%20-%20Part%202.pdf
P.S. in that link he has "The V6 weighs in at 176kg with
absolutely everything on it, as opposed to maybe
120kg for a fully dressed type 1 motor."
so 176kg == 387lbs ... 123lbs more than a VW ...

I'd thought about turning in 90*, but didn't think about a mid mount (was fixated on front or rear mount). Hmmm a bud used to desert race, I'll have to see what he thinks. Mid mount, using the transaxel as the "transfer" might be very cool. I know next to nothing bout transaxles ... I guess it could be welded solid to eliminate the differential ... shaft lengths might be tricky too (I wanna stay around 102" max wheelbase) and gotta have some room fro the pilot :)
Very cool idea tho.

Snofalls
I've got one ready to sell in my back shop and just went back and shoved it around....no way 220lbs, It's a 94 2.5 dohc from a Probe GT.

yea, I found in that one link fully dressed weighs in at 387lbs ...
Still that's "light" for a v6 :)

The Mazda V6 was fitted to European models BUT it was the 2ltr engine and AFAIK is not the same block as the 2.5. It was fitted to the Euro version of the Sidekick Sport (we didn't get the 1.8 version).

They could be using a different trans too,
you never know about the running gear
when you get into other countries of manufacture

Gearbox is the same but bellhousing is different
-
A removable bell housing, hmm
Makes me wonder what other trans
those go into, so you get a selection of
bellhousings, so what engine do we want
to install ???
