1992 Suzuki Sidekick JLX
So now I know where the computer is at. What is the black box against the firewall on the driver side? I can unplug it and nothing happens. It runs just fine and has no problem. I also have another box that I cannot remeber what it looks like. I'm pretty sure one is the tranny unless that is built into the ecm. So help me if one is a keyless entry and I never got any remotes when I purchased the truck used. I would be pissed since I'm sure I could have replacement remotes. I remeber checking it out back in the day and couldn't find anything. I know it would have to a after market add-on. Pictures and explinations would be nice
Also I couldn't find anything in the electrical diagram to indicate and additional black box connected to what seems to be everything. THen again I didn't find the tranny wire diagram either.
Come to think of it. I think one is power lock / window control since the sidekick is fully loaded. Except for like power seats or cruise control.
One more thing. I got a rear wiper control. One of the lights is burnt out. Little plastic gray thing with light. Nobody has it. Is this a dealer only item? Currently I only have one light and not both. One for washing and one for wiper control.
Thank You,
Josh

Does the "black box" look like it's bolted in to factory location with studs off the firewall? or is just tie-wraped or taped? Do the wires travel into/with the factory harness or are they seperate with tape or split loom? -Anything written on the box?

If it's a JLX, it came with the keyless remote security system from the factory. Look under the hood, against the firewall, and you'll see the "speaker" that does the alarm.
Also you would have a little switch just to the left of the steering column - "up" is the "valet" position, that turns off the alarm.
The other black box should be the brake computer (you have rear wheel ABS - I can't say that I ever noticed it actually "working" though).
Don't touch the metallic blue box that gets warm when you drive, that's the flux capacitor (OK, just kidding, it doesn't get warm...) ::)

Yes, it is a jlx. Please tell me your kidding about the keyless entry. (My wife loves keyless entry) Would explain it though. Um, from what I remeber it all looked factory. No name on the box but some numbers. I will have to look at them again. The one box I'm thinking of is black, and not really bolted on. But there is a clip that is clips onto. Nothing looks spliced in. Plus I don't ever remeber seeing a security light or speaker. So I really didn't think it was a security box. I'll have to look at it better during the day. All I know is I unplugged it years ago trying to sort out the problem and the vehicle ran just fine without it. Then I plugged it back in. I think the other box is for the windows. Not sure. I cannot remeber if the power key locks worked or not. So the rear is ABS? I didn't think it was since I have no ABS light in it. If just looks like a set of extra wires heading over to a extra box. To bad it wasn't a backup ecm. That would have been cool. For along time I thought it was the ecm. I know now of a few other things though. Like horn relay and such. So I know where that is and the ecm is now.

I have a JLX and I didn't get
any of that fancy stuff :'(
I wonder if the dealer just installs
all of that add on junk in the JLX
models and charges more to the
buyer without asking first ???
I don't have power locks, I've
been in the doors and I know
they are just manual locks
Didn't get an alarm, I put one
in, but it hasen't been plugged
in for years

The black box is most likely the ABS computer. Easy way to know if you have a rear ABS is to look at the front of the rear diff and if it has wires to a plug into the third member, you got rear ABS.

well as for the alarm. I didn't they got installed until like 95. But then again that website also aid tilt steering wasn't added utnil 95. But yet my 92 has it. Also I keep forgetting to put. 16v 4 door. Since that seems to make a difference.
Well I think I found the answer. I found a oem box on-line and it looks exactly the same. It is for Rear ABS. Strange it has rear abs. I never realized it did.

Don't take the "rear ABS" too seriously.
My 95 4-door 16 valve JLX also has it - jam on the brakes on a gravel road, and you'll lock up all four.
Oh, and the ABS doesn't work in 4-wheel-drive.
In my opinion, it doesn't work at all, and that's my conclusion from FOUR 4-door Sidekicks.
Now the ABS on my wife's Grand Vitara works really well - we get to see it kick in all the time on ice.
Anyway, both my 95 4-door JLX's came with the factory security system (and keyless remote to open the doors).
-
Yea I never got the ABS to kick in whenever I tried either. I've since swapped out the rear third and the new one doesn't have the speed sensor :)
One more thing abnout the ABS rear thirds ... some lockers may be a problem to install in one (I think the mini-spool wouldn;t be a problem, but I seem to recall that ARB for example requires a non-ABS rear ...)

I seem to recall that ARB for example requires a non-ABS rear
Nah, that's a rumor - laugh it off.
I just left the interruptor ring out, when I put the ARB in - I can't recall if I hooked the sensor back up or not. No worries.
