I posted this in the GV forum but would your input also.
Do you see any market for a short ram intake for the GV/XL-7? I'm currently working on a prototype setup. No, this isn't just a tube laying on the inner fenderwell with a Pep Boys filter on the end of it.
This will be a top notch system when I get it done with it, mandrel bent tubing and bracketry to match. Haven't spec'd a filter yet.
Any interest?

Hi Philip,
I know this isn't what you asked but I'd be more intersted in a set of headers that would replace/eliminate the cats...
Just whishin'...

Hummmm Headers ;D How about some headers for the 2.7L.
The ram air thing would be cool but not for crossing water or playing in the mud :-/
George

Let me clarify the intake, short ram means the air filter is located in the engine compartment. I hope that water or mud would not get to it otherwise, you'd better be wearing scuba gear.
As for headers both the GV and XL-7 have factory headers. I don't see much gain from designing from scratch. Your money is best spent elsewhere.
The guys on the Aerio board want me to design a header also, useless for the 1 hp you gain.
Thanks,
Philip

You should of seen my engine bay after the last time at paragon. ::) Anyways are you looking to just a tube and cone filter or a little more? And what kind of $$$ are we talking about here?
George

Yes, basically it will be a tube and filter with supporting bracket. I'm having the tube mandrel bent to fit perfectly. As for pricing I haven't come up with a figure yet. Depends on which filter I choose.
Thanks,
Philip

Philip,
I would have to respectfully disagree. The manifold on the 2.7 V6 is chuck full of tight 90 degree bends and pre-cats that restrict flow. The crossover pipe is also a concern too. Underneath it's heat shield the pipe is mearly 1" to maybe 1 1/2" large at the final collector.
Granted if both the gosintas and gosoutas are address the benefits are maximized but, for me, the exhaust would be a higher priority. I'm already running a conical type gauze filter on the intake side. Adding the filter was easy in comparison to building and installing an exhaust. That is where I would need vendor help.

Phil were you thinking of something like this

Yes something similar to the above picture. I thought about doing the same but I wanted something a little more sanitary looking with supporting bracketry.
What year of XL-7 is this picture from? My 2002 GV doesn't have a MAF sensor in the intake trac. This could lead to two different designs.
I hope to have my prototype setup done in a week. I'll post pics if I'm satisfied with it.

All Xl-7's have the MAF sensor in the intake trac. The GV's did not have them

You wouldn't be interested in making a 1" Throttle body spacer for the XL-7??? Or do you feel that too wouldn't help much with power.
George
-
Haven't thought about a throttle spacer. I did make them for the Samurai for awhile. I'm not sure how much the throttle spacers really work. Unforutunately dyno time is extremely expensive to validate the effectiveness of the spacer.
I wonder if the XL-7 tb has the same bolt pattern as my 2002 GV?

It looks the same as the GV when Idid have but then again I never got to into it as it was a lease.

A nice fit with brackets intake would be nice for the XL7.. id buy one.. Id guess with properly designed headers & intake you could get 12-15 hp tops.. Not a good return for your $$ for sure..

As promised here is my protype CAI system for the GV, maybe XL-7. Tube is not production version, just had a local muffler shop bend a 3" piece for me. Production version will be mandrel bent aluminum tube. Airfilter is off my Swift GT I'm still waiting for the correct filter to arrive. Silicone connector and clamps will be probably change also.
Not to sure about the color of the bracket and tube, will be decided later.

looks sweet Phillip. PLEASE don't go 'ricer' and make it weird colors. Plain alum or black is perfect.. make it look factory not a Pep boys accessory!!!

Not to criticize....but,
Wasn't the purpose of the open air filiment to get cold air into the intake? From this picture, there isn't much of an air flow behind that headlight structure to create a cold air induction. That hole on the side under the fender is where the stock was drawing cold air.
Another thing, being open filiment, there isn't much of a blockage for flying debri to keep from getting on the filter.
-
I tried not to use the term "cold air intake" but in one of my posts I did reference it. I always hated the term "cold air intake" because it should really be called "different air temperature intake".
Most of the gain would be from removing the stock airbox and providing a smoother path for incoming air. I'm not sure what affect if any breathing underhood air would be. For years many older cars use air systems that drew underhood air in and the engine ran fine.
I don't see a big problem with debri plugging the filter. I ran a K&N cone filter on my old Sidekick for a few years and never had any problem, on the street or wheelin.

Hello
Just a follow up on this. I installed a similar thing, a modified air intake but mine makes a lot of throtle noise at high RPM, i gues throtle noise. What do you do to reduce the noise??
Here is a message in posted recently but no answers
recently bought and installed a custom made air intake (K&N Filter), after removing the traditional air box. My suzuki Escudo increased speed and horsepower, though the Litres per kilometer seemed not to change much. What I hated most was the increased noise from the front, I gues throtle noise especially when I would be overtaking or when I accelerate so much ie when RPM would go up to say 3.5rpm. Because of the increased noise, I hated, I had to remove the supper funnel and go back to the traditional air box, But now I miss the high HP and speed I had got used to. So I am asking what I can put or how I could do it to reduce the noise.

Can't get rid of the noise. The stock airbox does make it quieter remove it and you will hear more intake noise.
Most guys not all, don't mind the noise for the extra h.p. it frees up.

Hi
I'm a newbie at this, but do these intake filters work? does anyone have figures on what the HP increase is - I'm looking at making the mod but wanted to get some clarifications as to the benefit.
I like the look of the ones at www.zookincustoms.com as I do not have the skills to conjur up the mod myself.
thx
-
I really didn't have an option on mine, the stock XL7 airbox wouldn't fit in the corner. I made my brackets out of some aluminum 1" strap stock.

I real good looking mod filter here
would be a hood scoop and filter box
for a true cold air ram system, like the
Subaru Turbo has on the Impreza is it ???

i do very much like the idea also, if an when this becomes reality i am also up for one, i understand you have been working on all the correct tubing and parts, but do you have an idea of time before its complete?
it does look great..
-
Interesting but XL7s drown in water too easily, I guess this setup moves the air intake directly out of the water ram injection (sarcasm) provided inside the front fender but do you have any ideas on better waterproofing the XL7, maybe a snorkel

Check out my reply to Grand Vitara snorkel on the main board.
