Well, i checked out a 2000 GV for 6,999 bucks with 61K miles on it. When they started it, it sounded like the lifters were ticking away a S.O.S.
The dealer said a little ticking (loundly) is normal at the price you can alawys have a shop fix it.
WTF. Not a good answer.
So to you normally get a Tickking noise? It sounded like lifters or a spark jumping, but I didn't want to take a chance.

They all tick like that i put some ATF3 in there ran it for a bit did a oil change and the noise is gone.

The ticking is often just gummed up valves and that can be fixed with a can of ENGINE RESTORER ( silver/red can ) from Walmart etc. Follow with oil change and good oil additive such as Duralube. I don't usually recomend "mechanic in a can stuff" but this really works if the problem is actually gummed up valves caused by cheap gas. Eliminate the other maybes such as exhaust leak, loose plug or spark leak ( bad wires ) and don't be afraid of the tick if all else checks out. If you think it is a bad valve do a leak down cylinder check.
You can pinpoint the tick by using a two foot long pvc pipe about 1 inch in diameter. With your ear on one end , move the other about the motor untill you find the source. OK...when you stop laughing...give it a try

These engines have obnoxious valve train noise if they have sit for a long period. If my rig(s) sit for a month or more they tick like mad for a considerable amount of time. What I do is let the vehicle warm up and then go drive around 'the block' that seems to fix it...

The 2.5liter motors are very famous for timing chain rattle that sounds like a ticky valve. Also if you tear it down you notice it is the same poor design toyota had for years and it wears through the guide eventually through the cover. Seen a ton of em that people thought were valves and they ended up being the chain. Also the head tech at the local shop says to be sure to keep oil changed regular and only run 5 30. Just my two cents

The last I heard Suzuki changed the timing chain guide material when they amped up the 2.5 so if you got a "04 or newer you shouldn't have to worry about guides anytime soon, also
I would NOT use any oil other than premium 5w30 in these engines either.

Stay on top of oil changes and use premium 5w30 'Dino or synthetic' and you'll be alright. ;)
