Title: Low Restriction Aircleaner/Filter Prototype (pics on)
Post by: zaggy on July 11, 2005, 11:16:06 AM
I'll post pics this afternoon....

Low restriction aircleaner/filter set up...direct bolt on
I've got the first prototype almost done I'll post pics later
today. Looks a little rough but will be good for testing.

Designed for rock crawling/street/trail use, won't hook up to snorkel,
not suitable for fording creeks, rivers etc.

Prd2BCdn you want to test it...you're close by and your engine
should respond well to more breathing, should be finished later this week.
PM me

Bear in mind I made this one out of stuff I had lying around

Should get alot more air to the engine and the filter is a
easy to gete replacement or you can get a K&N element

Sits lengthwise (long part front to back) on the throttle body.
Still need to cut a couple holes and get a couple of fittings.

Looks less restrictve than the stock horn...has a Shelby 289 kinda look to it ;) I'm glad you mentioned the fittings, I was wondering what you were going to do about those...

Ya I like the Shelby style....

And it let me run a larger cheap element for better airflow without running into stuff

Is it gonna be all underhood? If so, that would sucks in ALOT of air. Alot of HOT air...... :-\

I'm currently running a cone style air cleaner under the hood and even if it is sucking in hot air its still noticeably more power than the stock restrictive airbox, even on a hot day...the one that Zag is prototyping will at least be getting air from the cool side of the engine...plus a small hood scoop could help feed some cooler air as well

The way I look at it is the stock set up should be highly restrictive and with the
cross over tube and exhaust side aircleaner housing it's also already getting engine bay tempature air.
This is not meant to be the be all and end all of cold air induction...just a simple straight bolt on for some one starting out.
     The be all comes later..............

You may want to fit this to an engine and try it out. I know from experience that on the earlier 8-valves the injection is really noisy and without the baffling it is really annoying. When accessories are turned on there is an 'idle up' type routine that sounds like a pissed off pop corn maker.  :) The most annoying thing is "the look" and then the subsequent explanation of what it is to EVERYONE that you meet on the trail, sigh...

Started getting parts togather today.  mine is going to go right out the hood, sealed so it gets fresh air. i'm building mine out of some old aftermarket air cleaners we have lieing around my shop.  my engine/chassie/body configuration is alot different from everone elses so i'll post some pics in a few days. ;)
