Title: correct gear ratio for 32's / 33's opinions wanted!!
Post by: bashzuk on July 13, 2005, 11:25:51 PM
Ok I just SPOA'd my zuki and now I'm wondering about gear ratio's I was thinking of going with 5.14 in the T-Case and 4.62 in the diff's
Is there a better T-case / diff option?

Just looking for the wealth of knowedgable opions here.

Also does anyone know what the high range number is after a 5.14 T-case swap.
Looking for an acutal number not an advertising percentage.

I think the 5 to 1's are 1.8 in high range with a 33 tire at 65 mph you would be turning about 4400 rpm's, if you do a lot of freeway driving or plan on going to a 1.6 engine you could go with 4.30's and lose about 400 rpm's.

IMO ... get some tcase gears and then wheel it ...

The 4.16 set from TT yields a 12% reduction in high and shuld be enuf for the "street" with those 32's. The TT 4.9:1 set has a 16% high reduction for more $$$. I think the 4.16 would probably be good for the 32's (and bonus is you might find a "used" tcase with 4.16's already). Going deeper that 4 or 5 in the tcase (with stock diff gears) risks breakage. I've seen you wheel and you're not crazy with the skinny pedal (considering you had little tires and no lift, that was cool).

It's not that I think you should lower the gears in the diffs as well! I just think that you can get lots of "seat" time with a 4:1 or so tcase and then deal with the diffs when you decide to run 33's (or more?). When you do the axels, you may decide to go yota (aka 35's  :o ), or hybrid (with tracker 5.12's), or ...

Get the seat time (both street and trail), then decide on the the diffs.

So how's the bash doing with the 32's on the street? Gutless?, scary?, ???

Gutless is an under statement 40 is max speed well 45 since speedo is off by 5 mph (checked with GPS).  the Freeway is not in my future while driving it.
The ride is great, steering is actually easier with the 32's than the old tires. ???
I don't get it either. hoping to get a little trail time in this weekend on some mild trails by Oly just to get a feel.
Was definately planning on doing transfercase first since they are easier to set up.
course I could just order the diff change from Trail tough and then see how it does.

I'm thinking I'll probably do the diffs to 4.62 for sure. So the 4.16 may not be a bad option.
it's 424 from Trail Tough. The only reason I was thinking of going with the 5.14 was to get a little lower crawl ratio in the end.

But as always until it's bought and paid for and put in everything is an option.
