hi ,sorry if this subject has already been discussed but I have a specific question.I have a friend and someone gave him a mini spool to put on the rear axle of his sidekick. He installed it and when the truck is loaded or when he has a gear in and uses the throttle,it works ok except that its not unlocking.O.K,normal for a mini spool someone would say.The problem is that when he just lets the truck roll on the street ,a loud annoying noise comes from the diff with the spool. Is this normal ? If not ,what could be the problem ?
Thank you .

i wouldn't say thats normal, did he take it apart and not set the gears up correctly? thats what it sounds like to me.

Thanks Stu.I dont know anything about spools.I have an EZ locker on the rear.I have take it apart many times and assembled it again. But I dont know what is going on with a spool. The procedure is the same ?
A spool operates the same as an EZ or Lockright except that its not unlocking and does not produce the "clicking" sound ?
I dont know what he did ,I ll ask him.He says that when he puts neutral or even has a gear in without throttle and lets the truck just roll, the loud noise that is produced can be heard from 50+ meters away. If I assume that he didnt set the gears up correctly then why the spool doesnt produce the spound under throttle or load but just when the truck rolls ? Is it possible ?

I run a minispool and the it doesnt make a sound. The only noise is the tires will squeal if Im in a really tight turn.
If its a loud popping noise something is broken, If it is whining noise he doesnt have the gear backlash set right. Call a dealership and ask them what the factory backlash is. Dont run it the way it is, it will wear the gears out quickly.

A mini spool has no moving parts and will never unlock. The gears are definetly not setup properly, and driving it as is will destroy the diff in very short order. It's most likey just the backlash is out ...
Here's a tech page about a spool install (this is for a sami, but trac/kicks are nearly the same). Same procedure (i.e. mark well and reassemble carefully) will also work for a lockright/ez locker. If you'r doing a R/P change, you have to re-setup the pinion and the backlash, so this procedure only really applies for "locker" installs.

O.k thank you very much. :)
I also found the article about installing the mini spool in the Sammy diff...
