Title: rear defrost switch - light on it stays on all time unless headlights are on
Post by: mth712 on July 21, 2005, 11:00:11 PM
Have an aftermarket plastic protop on it and came with factory rear defrost switch and defroster on rear window. Previous owner installed. Light on switch is always on unless headlights are on and then it goes off. Does anyone know how previous owner may have installed this wrong? I do have a spare switch from junk yard but haven't tried it. I think it was a wiring problem.

Sounds like its hooked into the wiring for  the rear bumper fog lights.

Not sure about that - why would the light on the switch go off when the lights are turned on. I wish I had the instructions for the protop hardtop so I could see how it was suppossed to be wired for the rear defrost. I am thinking that the switch wiring is already there on all trackers and it was just a matter of sticking the switch in there. Will look at today if my fat arse can handle the extreme heat outside today.

Your right I had that backwards, the switchs on my car are side by side and turning off the headlights turns off the fog lights so figured he might of mixed up the plugs.

Figured it out. I got a defrost switch from a Tracker at the salvage yard. Took out the switch that came with the hardtop which previous owner put in. The pins on the switch were in a different location but the plug fit. Junkyard switch is a small button with light under it. Switch I took out has the button and light all one piece that pushes in. Junkyard switch works good except bulbs were burnt out. Swapped bulbs installed junkyard switch and all is good.
