Title: Some weeks you just can't win-(but some you can!)
Post by: zaggy on July 22, 2005, 07:24:35 PM
Ever have one of those weeks....

Just got in from doing ground testing on the airplane, well it looks like .415" lift was a little more than the stock rockers like (after 30hrs at WOT) and one let go.
Of course when a rocker lets go at 5900rpm it make a mess before you can shut it down. The damage is not bad just the one rocker (exhaust #2) but it damaged the cam. Called my cam guy, and he says..."Remember I'm tooo busy with oil field to bother with cams, I don't have time". Fortunately he had given me the masters.
Problem...Transport is supposed to come at the end of the week to do our final inspect...and they won't do it if the engine isn't running....so the scramble is on to get find a way to get a new cam ground and get it installed and tested.

     I do this for fun.....right?

Zag

Thanks for letting me vent......

P/S

Maximium recommended lift on stock valvetrain   .395". The airboat engine apparently just broke 75hrs, mostly at WOT with no visible wear. I'll put the very slightly tamer cam in it.

i guess on a lighter note. it's better to have this happen on the ground instead of 10,000 feet. you'll get through it.

good luck  :)

Don't you think this is an isolated event ?
Unless the rocker had a weak spot, or the
spring bottomed out, what would cause
this type of failure ?

Hi Wild

Had a buddy that specializes in  Funny Car engines comeover and check it out. Apparently the ramp angle to get the lift is too steep for the rocker/spring combo so the rocker doesn't follow properly......while only one broke the others showed signs of fatigue just behind the adjusting screw mount.
I initially thought, bad rocker, happens......but when I took in apart and looked at the break it looked funny to me so I screamed for smarter help.....to keep the lift the ramp angles would need changed....don't have time to redevelope so I'll back down a notch.

Ahh Ramp angle, didn't think of that.
How small is the base circle ? did they
grind that down to get the lift, or weld
and grind the new profile ?

Gound it down........

Not a biggie, I figure that the milder cam is only gonna cost 4-5hp max, that takes me back to 109-110hp.......and no rocker problems.

I can live with that..literally when we are talkin flying.

In spite of keeping up with the forum....

This weekend I had to drive 4hrs and back to rural Saskatchewan to pick up my daughter from my sister's farm.

While out in the middle of farm country I had the pleasure of meeting this neat old farmer that happens to have a cam grinder! He used to be huge into racing and stuff and was a wealth of knowledge about profiles etc.

What does he happen to have....a Suzuki 1.6/8v in a tractor, luvs it. He also made a special
grind cam for it....for pulling ploughs etc. We also spent a few hours talking about my cam problem and various other cam related issues...this guy has forgot more about cams than I ever knew.
I think we not only came up with a solution for my problem on the aircraft, but he is e-mailing me the info on his 1.6/8v pulling cam and (2) others.

Just when things look crappy, there is a light.

Geez....

What are the chances of that...a cam grinder and running a suzuki motor in a tractor.  That is just plain amazing, I kept waiting to read...and then I woke up. :D

then again who thought of one in an airplane?

Hey Zaggy,

What is this airplane you are working on?
I am currently just finishing my commercial pilots licence up, it sounds like an interesting story.

BTW, anyone wanna turn my sidekick into a tractor?

It's called a Griffon

Very similar to a Cessna 150....where are you in Alberta, you might wanna see the first flight...should be soon.

Hey Mythose

Guess this guy was BIG into making cams for the stock car and Road Race guys back in the 60's-70's...he tells me when he stopped he could'nt get a decent price for the grinder...so he kept it! Lucky for me.
He had the Suzuki cause his neighbors kid wrwote it off....tractor needed a motor...so...

Hmmm... now if only you knew where to find a bunch of torque-hungry zuki owners, you and him could make a mint! But where to find such a group of people... ::) ??? ::)

Zag,

Very cool, I would be interested in checking it out. I am in Red Deer, and I am moving to Lethbridge at the end of the month here, so that might be a little trip up.

I was just trying to get ahold of you, are you back in your office?

Hey Digger

Great thought....Problem he doesn't want to...his machine is ancient and very labor intensive (no computer controls) so while he's gonna help me out (I'm trading him some parts) he doesn't want to or need to get into making cams again.
So I'm dying to get this new grind for the airplane from him and see the details on the other cams.
The tractor was pretty cool....it's a little Massey from the 40's, he uses it for his garden (10acres) and man does it have torque....the thing is great from 0 to about 4500 and then it's all over, but does it pull down low.
If the airplane cam works out I'm gonna see about paying him to do some masters, but first I need to find someone that can do small runs....eventually maybe.

     For now....get the airplane fixed.
