Title: Question on Auto Tranny
Post by: Digger on July 29, 2005, 11:32:42 PM
I recently picked up a 92 kick 4 door cheap. It has a 16 valve and an auto tranny. How do I tell if the tranny is a 3 speed or a 4 speed? there's no indication of an overdrive other than a switch near the gearshift that has N and P on it, which I assume is for Normal or Power mode. Is this an overdrive switch or a torque-converter lockup?

Should be and sounds like the 4spd but there should be a button on the underside of the grip on the trans shifter that you depress to activate/deactivate the overdrive and a light saying overdrive should illuminate on the dash.

The switch engage the overdrive If I remember correctly.
- Normal...overdrive mode
- Power...swithces to direct drive, no overdrive

Zag, the normal and power mode switch is seperate from the O/D and alters shift up and shift down points. It lets you hold more rpm before shifting up and kicks down earlier. On mine it works whether the O/D is on or off.

What would it drive like if I put the 4.62 thirds into a 5 speed Tracker on 215-75-R15 tires? Would it end up driving like it did with 5.12's and 31's or would it be better, just not rev as high on the road at 60?

Hey Digger

Quick math on a napkin (can't find my calc) says it will be very similar to 31's with 5.12's.
But it's a 16v so you've got more power and torque to play with. As a hi way driver occasional off roader (like me) it would be a neat combo in my opinion.

Actually I was thinking of putting the 4.62's into Silver to replace the 5.12 front I stole to fix the Goblin's exploded diff. Silver's a 5 speed with an 8 valve...

Have you found out if the trans is a 3 or 4 speed? A 4 speed will have 5.12's, IIRC.

Well, according to the replies so far, it would appear to be a 4 speed auto, so does that mean it's got 5.12's?
