Title: putting in a rev counter....

hello all!

there seems to be 2 different "clusters" on vitaras (sidekicks for you). One, (which i think is newer) has the rev counter in, but mine doesnt. Is it an easy case of swap them around? or will a rev counter being fitted require a lot of work...??

I just put in a small aftermarket one myself...  only took half and hour, and works great.  + i mounted it right on top of the Speedo cowl. Its really easy to see and looks cool at the same time.

I take it by your wording you are not in the US or Canada

1) Check with your dealer in Country, in Canada, depending on year, the wiring harness has
    the provision for a tachometer (rev counter).
2) If the harness has provision for a Tachometer you simply need to get one of the correct
    year from your local auto recycler and install it. (Easy)
3) If it does not have provision for the factory Tach, I would follow Blasted's advice, it's the
    easiest-simplest-cheapest route to go.

I thought changins instrument clusters is illegal cause you disguise a vehicles true mileage.  find a nice TASTEFUL tach, not one of those 5" eyesores, and put it in a decent location.  I hardly ever pay attention to mine anyways

it is not illegal to change the cluster if you present the vehicle as "mileage unknown"  at least in the u.s.
what is ilegal is if you falseley advertise or sell the vehicle with actual milage when it has actualy been tampered with.
but you never know what the last owner did  ;)
there is lots of fraud that goes along with this subject, the people who get screwed with one of these issues are people who have no common sense. it's pretty easy to estimate how many miles are on a vehicle by looking it over closley , weather the odometer works or not

Its definately not illegal here although misrepresenting the mileage is. If you buy a vehicle with history then the MOT (annual test) certificates have the mileage recorded. Of course that takes no account of what size tyres/gearing the owner is running.

As someone currently in the business....

You are all right...
- It is illegal to mis represent the mileage of a vehicle by altering or changing the speedo.
- You can change the speedo legally as long as you make note of any mileage diff and advise
  a potential purchaser, up front.

The other thing to bear in mind as a consumer...most real late model vehicles (99 up), the ECM records the mileage as well so if you are suspect, take it to the dealer and they can, (in many cases) pull up the mileage as it is recorded on the ECM. Works for alot of models, but not all I'm afraid.
     A lot of mfg's have done this to help curb speedo tampering.
