I stripped my distributor tonight to try to get to grips with whats inside it. The FSM shows the ignition as having a dizzy, a coil, an igniter box and a suppressor unit. This is mine

No HT lead! and no external coil

Cap removed, hall effect trigger is visible as is HT output from what looks like a built in coil

This is the heart of it, a built in coil with the ignition transistor/FET also inside the dizzy. There are 8 wires on the plug. I'm going to take it to work tomorrow to try and do some tests on it to find out whats what. Anyone seen one like this before??

Welcome aboard tnt16 ;D
Nice to see ya ;D
I've never taken my 97 one apart yet.
but my 95 just had a cap and rotor. If I recall correctly. It has been 5 years since I took it apart. ;D

It could be the same as a 16V I suppose as I believe they have an extra sensor on the crank. Any 16V guys out there care to chip in?

Both my 16v's have external coils (ones a '92 and ones a '93) and my fathers '91 8v looks nothing like yours either ???

Well I went back to the schematic on suzukinfo.com. The one for the 1996 Sidekick which is MPI and therefore I would imagine 16V too. Bingo! it looks like the same thing shown on there, the wire colours on the loom match too. I'll give it a quick check with a DMM but I reckon thats another mystery solved. I guess when they switched back to the 8V engine they had a load of 16V dizzys left. Thanks for your help chaps.
