I had the exact same thing happen to mine. Go buy yourself a new clutch cable and toss it in, problem solved. By the way DO NOT buy an cheap cable, get an OEM one or equal. The good ones have a metal housing that bolts to the firewall, cheap ones are plastic.

My tracker did that before,
One of the tabs that hold the cable away from the engine (bottom of rad) came off, made that kind of noise ( the cable housing moves way more without them/pedal feels wierd too) The dirt probably didn't help much, but I'd suggest changinng the cable to
Steve. :)

Yeah one of my clips came off once...only the cable got into the belt, rubbed a hole right through it....going through town one day, go to stop, hit the pedal...pop....no stopping. Luckily the transmissions are well engineered enough you can shift without a clutch if you are careful, and I have a huge battery so I would kill it, roll up to a red light, when the light turned green I would just crank it in first gear and go on...:-D
