Title: grinding noise from drivetrain

 ??? sounds like my front wheel berrings are about to go. what kind of noise will i be hearing, will it go away if its out of gear and coasting?

Mate, if you can hear them then all is not well. Jack the front and see if the wheel has excessive / any play. If they have got bad enough to hear then GET THEM FIXED - NOW!!!!
Otherwise it is going to end in  :'(.
Oh yeah, where are you from so I can stay off the road for a while ;)

If the sound goes away, it's your
U-joints, sounds like a grinding when
you take off ? even moving slow ?

Wheel Bearings take some speed to
make their noise, about 20 MPH or so

Hey zed, I don't mean ta push ya over but what kinda rig ya got?  Hey wild how hard and how much would it cost to change both sets of bearings in the front of a kick? my neighbors are getting there!

I don't know, never had to change mine in 280,000 miles,
must be the Mobil1 grease I use  ;)

Wheel bearing will vary pitch/sound if you hit the brakes or steer from side to side.......u-joints will stay consistent with speed.
