I've been watching the different threads on oils, and I've decided that I'm going to switch to synthetic. I have an 02 2.5L V6 with 42000 miles. It has had regular changes every 3k - 4k mile with Pennz 10w-30 (oops :-/ I've just been reading about how 10w-30 can be bad with the V6 engines). Anyways I'm wondering if there is any prep work I need/should do before making the switch? I'm assuming I should use and engine flush kit/product beforehand, or is that not really necessary? Also, any recomendations on a product? So far I have seen Gunk- Motor Flush, Valvolline - Engine Flush and AMSOIL - Engine Flush.

I have used gunk befor seamed ok, just make sure that you put some regular oil and new filter on it and run it for a while befor you waste your new synthetic oil.
-
I was thinking about doing the same thing. Anybody use Castrol Syntec? Or does everyone use Mobile 1. I think Castrol is a little cheaper. Thanks, Dave
-
And on a similar note, does anyone use AMSOIL? If the product is half of what they hype it up to be it sounds interesting. 1/year oil changes would be nice, although I would probably still change it 2/year when changing the oil filter. What's up with that, you supposed to change the oil filter but not the oil!!!!
-
I would never use Gunk, etc on any engine of mine. If you want to clean the inside of your engine this is the only way to go: http://www.auto-rx.com/

My opinion, synthetic is a waste of money if you change your oil every 3000 or so miles and Pennzoil 5w30 is good stuff.

How would it be a waste of money if it doesnt cost more?? At the rate I put mileage on my car, changing the oil every 10 000kilos instead of every 5000 saves me alot of time and everyone knows that time is money...

I don't think you read what I wrote. If you go 6,000 miles (10,000 kilometers) like you say you do then it's worth the synthetic. I said if you change your oil every 3,000 it's a waste of money to switch to synthetic. A good dino oil can go way longer than 3,000 anyway.

Sorry bout that, I misunderstood...... and I agree 100% with what your theory.. ;)

Dino Vs Synthetic
Dino oil is a refined crude. Refining isn't a perfect process, so there will still be impurities in the finished product.
Dino oil contains paraffin, which over-thickens the oil when cold, in turn greatly increasing the load on your starter and eating fuel economy.
Any refined oil is made up of molecules that vary in size. Smaller molecules evaporate more readily, leaving larger molecules behind and causing the oil to get thicker with age.
These varying molecules also limit the friction-reducing ability of the oil.
On the other side of the coin, here's why we prefer synthetics:
Being a manufactured product, synthetic engine oil molecules are very uniform in size, meaning evaporation has minimal impact on viscosity.
Synthetic oil molecules are also rounder in shape than refined oil molecules, giving them superior lubrication characteristics.
Synthetic oils maintain a more constant viscosity over a wider temperature range, meaning it's safer to tag high RPM on a cold engine because a synthetic oil film is less likely to break down. (Analogous to tearing a piece of cold clay.)
A lubricant that's very slippery reduces frictional power loss and improves fuel economy.

Just wondering, does anyone use Castrol Syntec instead of Mobil 1?

I'm taking the day long silence in here as a "NO" ;D

How about a "did". I used it in my Vanagon and it worked fine but no better than GTX.

Ok, thats good to know, I use the regular GTX, have been for about 12 years and I'd have to say at least 8 diffrent cars and trucks plus both my Suzukis, and never really had a problem. Only thing that got me thinking about it is the timing chain tensioner making a little noise on the 2.0. Thanks, Dave ;D

I know you must use 5w30 but from what I've read 0w30 is the good stuff. Made in Germany and it can sometimes be found at Autozone and Advance. It says made in Germany on the back of the bottle. Expensive. :o
-
I always used 10W30, and had a leaking cam seal. changed to 5W30, the leak went away by itself.
-
I've always used 5W30 Mobil 1. Just this past weekend I changed to 10W30 because I can get it much cheaper at a wholesale store then the local parts store.
So I haven't noticed any difference or leaks.
I love the synthetic, I think it's worth every cent. My motor runs smoother, cooler and more powerful. Also, my Sidekick stays outside year round, and it when it's -40 degress C outside, that motor oil runs silky smooth.
Castrol Syntec is a few bucks cheaper and alot of Japanese race cars run on it so I say go for it!!!

This is kind of a dumb question, but is Castrol Syntec a partial synthetic, or full synthetic. I thought that Castrol made a partial synthetic, but I can't remember. Anybody know about this ??? Thanks, Dave ;D

0w30 (German Castrol) is real synthetic, the rest are not truly synthetic. Still good oil.
-
if you run synthetic can you go back to regulor oil?

Yes and you can even mix if you have too. A few years ago this was not possible, but the polymers in the syn oil have come a long way.
They used to sludge up when you mixed in dino oil.
-
Well, thats good to know, I wasn't sure if Syntec was all synthetic, like say, Mobil one. Thanks, for the info, Dave

It's a hydrocracked Group III. Castrol had a court battle to prove it was synthetic. They won, we lost, it's still not a true synthetic. I like Castrol products, it's their marketing that leaves something to be desired. ;)
