Title: 4wd question
Post by: TCWJoe on August 14, 2005, 11:54:47 AM
As I said a few minutes ago in my introductory post, I just bought a '91 Tracker for $700.

After I wrote, I went outside to mess with it a little and I can't figure out how to put it into 4wd.  Is it the little button at the bottom of my auto shift column or is there some switch someplace else?  There's a lot of rigging that's been done to the interior abd I'm not positive where it is.  Anybody with pics would be awesome.

Thanks,

Joe

Um you may want to check to make sure you have 4 wheel drive. Because every kick i been in had a shifter rightin the middle for 4 wheel drive no switchs. RIght in the middle of you console between your seats should be a shifter. THe only zuks with push button are xl 7 and vitras but they have to be 04 or newer.

It's got the shifter for 4wd near the sutomatic shifter.  I was just wondering how to put it into 4wd mode

It just shifts normal. One down is 4hi and 2 down is 4low. Try putting it in netural first and make sure to lock hubs.

Thanks, I thought that there was a button or a switch that I'd have to screw with to get it to go.  That push/pull button must be an overdrive thing then.

Push / pull thing if it is at bottom left corner of shifter console is to be able to shift out of park if the solenoid fails that trips when you step on brake pedal or if you need to shift with key out.

The shift pattern is more of a push forward,
first position is 4 high, pull towards you and
forward is neutral, stop before you shift into
4 low, which is forward after neutral, easy stuff.

Now if the hubs have never been apart, or it
doesn't see much hub locking, the hubs might
be sticky, and not engauge, if you lock the hubs
you can shift into 4 high while moving, say 25 MPH,
if you get a grinding of the T-case, then you have
sticky hubs and you will want to come back here
and do a search for the link to the hub tech

You guys just answered my question.  I am an idiot.  I forgot to lock the hubs.  (I have become to spoiled with auto hubs).  I test drove a 91 tracker and threw it into 4 hi but the truck did no shimmy when i turned hard.  I did agree to buy it for cheap because i needed a project and work vehicle. ::)
