I'm new to the forum but am looking at buying a 96 Tracker 5 speed. It is pretty solid but high mileage - 165,000. Current owner bought it off an older couple who said they towed it for about 80,000 miles behind a motorhome. I'm not sure if I believe it but, engine is quiet and smooth with good power and the body/interior is nice. It looks like it could be true.
Anyway, Trans has a grumble in idle with the clutch out so, it is not the throw-out bearing. Clutch needs adjustment but is quiet and doesn't slip. At speed, cannot hear the noise over the wind and engine. Other than that, it shifts fine and feels good with good synchros.
I figure it must be an input shaft or idler shaft bearing....
Questions:
-Is this type of noise/bearing problem common?
-Is it expensive for the trans parts?

Without hearing it I wouldn't venture a guess....
But if the Zuk is that nice and the price is right plan for the worst and hope for the best.
- Clutch and Trans are not that expensive and they are not that difficult to do.
- If you get lucky it might be something simple and easy (anyone check the fluid?)

Pilot bearings grumble too

The owner said that someone checked the trans for lube a few months ago.
It could be the pilot bearing because I don't hear it in gear going slow.
Either way, I just made a decision to buy it for $1400.00 and I'll be using the Forum

Pilot bearings grumble when stopped,
the flywheel is turning but the input
shaft is not, on the other hand a throw
out bearing grumbles when the clutch is
pushed, but also while driving, but not
usually heared when driving
