Last Friday one of my co-workers Sidekick got rear ended by a truck. This is the result.
Amazingly, he did not break any bones. They did have to use the jaws of life to extract him though. Fortunately, he was alone and didn’t have any one in the back.

Glad to hear he's OK. That poor lil Kick. :(
Show that to somebody who give you the "Aren't those things unsafe?" routine.

I am just a awful guy..... I looked at those pictures, and my mind started wondering if certan parts are still good. Shame on me. I am glad your friend is ok. Its good nobody was in the back seat. How fast was that truck going? Was it a semi? Did the thing roll in that accident, that is the important thing. You know they say those things roll pretty easy .
Just kidding

Actually, it looks like they only used the Jaws to pop the passenger side door; no way they were gonna use them on the drivers side and the fact that the roof is still intact eliminates that possibility. Glad to hear he was OK, but I'll wager he'll be on a Tylenol diet for a few days. Even though there were no bones broken, I'd hate to have to take a lick like that!!
Dave
P.S. I'm gonna take this one to work as proof my little shuttlecraft can take a licking and still protect the occupants...

wow, the thing that scares me the most is that it was a 4 door :o now its shorter then a 2 door. makes me think about what i'm driving :-\

Man he was lucky, I'm realy thinking hard about putting on a rear swing out tire carrier after seeing that and maybe a roll cage also.
-
Holy Shit how fast was the Truck going when he hit that poor Kick? Good to hear it held up good enough so save your friend.
I'm betting the Kick was sitting still and the truck was at least a 10,000# box truck traveling 40 MPH or more at the time of impact.

glad to here that he is O.K. :)
but everyone should remember that these cars are safe, an expidition might (key word) fare better in some circumstances, but all auto accidents are different based on the events leading up to it ;)
if you are scared of accidents i suggest you dont drive at all weither you drive a zuki or a big gas guzzling SUV (hell you might as well not even leave your home)
I am going to keep driving safe as can be suzuki vehicles and not worry about death or injury.
i'll only warn you, stay the hell out of my way ;D

That was a total Body Hit, notice how the rear
bumper is still about where it belongs. One more
reason to drive a Lifted Trucklet

Wild, you beat me to that.
There appears to be almost NO crush to the frame. That is why there is so much intrusion into the interior. These pics are my new excuse for the suspension/body lift.
I'm glad to hear that your friend is ok. Zukis can be replaced. Friends and loved ones.... not very likely.

Thank you for your replies.
I found out some more information.
This was a 7 vehicle accident. His sidekick took the initial hit. If you look at the second picture, you'll notice a big white truck in the background on the left side. That’s what plowed into him and then into another vehicle.
I was wrong on the jaws of life part.
He was able to escape via the passenger door. However he was stuck for awhile because the his seat had tilted up on the left side and couldn’t reach the seat belt release. This really scared him because he smelled gasoline.
echojeff, LOL. I was wondering the same thing. After I found out he was ok, I was thinking. Hmm... that’s a new engine in his Sidekick. He just had a new engine put in about 3 months ago. My sammy could use a upgrade.

I can't leave this one alone
Your friend was lucky to be driving a Track/Kick! I'm in the auto recycling business (autowrecker) and I've seen these poor little machines hit front, rear, rolled and smacked in both sides.
They are much tougher than anything it's size and for that matter alot of larger stuff...why do you think I bought my wife one!
Full frame, good crush zones and IMHO better than average roll over protection. In short I'm glad your friend was driving one....he got out.

No wonder why, Look at hte size of that dang truck that hit him.
Zukipilot was right ;)
I'm glad he is Okay too.
I was a wrecker driver for 7yrs but never had a chance to tow a Zuki from an accident ;D
But seen other cars that had the same type of damage.
And yes, I was thinking what good parts were left over.
Being a Zookaholic seems worse than a alcoholic sometimes.

That's really impressive that your friend survived that without harm... that's pretty gnarly looking :o
Any more details on the wreck, such as why the truck ran into him and another car? Inquiring minds want to know ;)

Yeah, details please, kinda looks like it was hit by an 18 wheeler at freeway speeds. I sometimes travel with a 19 month old in mine, kinda scary. Now I see why the newer vehicles have such a big rear end.

Do you put your 19 month old in the back or front seat of your Tracker? I put my son in the front because I figure there is more metal around him in front.
-
Right now our 4 month old rides in the front
I use a special harness set up with a really good baby bucket and extra padding and straps
When he gets a little older he will move to the middle of the back using a racing seat I had made for my daughter when she was little. It is really a ABS aluminum toddler baby seat, complete with the Simpson 4 point harness and a submarine belt.

He's in the back, but I now think this winter he'll be moving it the front, the wife will have to tuff it out in the back seat! Or I'll get a rear roll cage.... ;D

shit glad he is ok.....
I had two incidends lately
1. I got rear ended and he hit my gas tank bar.....hurt him but I did get a new rear bumper out of it ( yeah me!)
2. last week i put a sticker on my truck that say's attack the dirt !! my wife took it literaly and got ran off the road by another car on a back road....we are ok little bit of damage to the kick.
but both really proved how strong these little things are

They are really tough little cars. My sister rearended a 2002 Altima with my right front, hit the car in the back left when she was learning to drive stick. $4k in damages to the Altima, $20 in damage to my tracker.

Some lady rear ended my Kick when my
wife was driving it, the T-bird had to get
towed away, I got a slightly bent tail pipe

Does your Nanny government let you put the kid in the front seat? Down here there are some states that have gotten down right stupid about child seats and booster seats. My sister in Washington state asked her pediatrian(who helped write the 80# child booster seat law) "my mom weights 95 lbs, does she need a booster seat too"? He said "smaller adults would do better in a crash if they had one". So I guess thats next for the evergreen state. I thought it was the law to have kids in the back seat until they get to be a certian age, or size.

From what I've read about Illinois the law the only requirement is to have the child in an appropriate booster seat. Didn't say anything about front or back. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know, even if it is in another state.

Wow, looking again at that picture brings back memories. I ran a tow truck for a few years and seen worse than that. I'm impressed with how well it held up to the truck, did anyone say how fast the truck was going? Also, odds are he had his foot on the brakes, otherwise it probably would have bounced more and maybey not been as bad. (I'm guessing sitting at a stop sign or in traffic. What a shame, I'm really glad to har your friend is ok, and like was mentioned earlier, he's gonna want a jumbo Sams Club sized bottle of Tylonol. Hope hes feeling ok, Dave ;D

In Alberta
A child must be in an approved saftey seat for the age...they recommend center rear seat, which I have always thought is sh!t. If momma is constantly turning around to see what the kid is doing what happens.....she rear ends a Sidekick 4dr while driving a 10,000# truck.
I' ve had the argument with several police officers and saftey types and after running through the pro's and con's they usually agree with me.
